Modern Day Intro to Hecate
Revisado: 03-13-24
Whereas I found the information very useful, the narrator's style is grating on the nerves, and the narrow range of expression through the entire book at times is maddening, since no matter the subject the treatment is the same. That said, the information in here is comprehensive for all levels of experience and I do recommend it for anyone who wants to work with or know about this Goddess.

Historia
From the United States and Britain to continental Europe and beyond, liberal democracy is under siege, while authoritarianism is on the rise. In Twilight of Democracy, Anne Applebaum, an award-winning historian of Soviet atrocities who was one of the first American journalists to raise an alarm about antidemocratic trends in the West, explains the lure of nationalism and autocracy. In this captivating essay, she contends that political systems with radically simple beliefs are inherently appealing, especially when they benefit the loyal to the exclusion of everyone else.

Lots of background, stunning clarity

Trying to understand why our country has lost its mind, I listened to this book. The author seemingly gives anecdotes that are extraneous, but stick with it, she's laying groundwork and explaining her conclusions, it's well worth the wait. I'm buying the physical book so I can refer to it and use it to counter the arguments of those who don't bother informing themselves about the direction that our country is headed in.

Historia
Richard Painter and Peter Golenbock present a clear description of rule of law - arguably the single most important principle underlying our civilization. They also describe the abuses of power that have occurred throughout our nation's history. Beginning in Puritan New England with the infamous Salem Witch Trials, American Nero makes vivid stops at The Red Scare of the 1920s, Japanese-American internment, the McCarthy Era, and, much more recently, President Trump's attempt to violate the First Amendment by banning Muslims from entering the US.

Nero's competition for worst emperor
Revisado: 01-17-23
No American politician in this book is spared the cold eye of history. But then no American politician has been Trump before. In this book Painter compares Trump to Nero and all the other politicos who have abused their power. But one thing is clear: Trump is the worst offender. Unless he is stopped he will ruin us all.

In our time of rising authoritarianism how do you stand up to the lies fueling power that wants only to control the narrative and thereby control *you?* Maria Ressa shows us how because she's already done it. At times fast Forwarded but never bypassing her message and her methods. This book stays in my library and gives me hope

Historia
Never let real life get in the way of a good story, especially when a good story involves three witches, including a fairy godmother, and travelling to a faraway land to make sure that a servant girl doesn't marry a prince. It looks as though a happy ending may be averted before catastrophe strikes. But unfortunately, the forces of good are up against a godmother who has made Destiny an offer it can't refuse.

good story but technical issue
Revisado: 08-04-22
This is the usual Pratchett humor as 3 witches try to save a kingdom. Worth listening to, but the volume of the recording varies so much that I went from turning the volume down to turning it up and holding it against my ear! The narrator does a wonderful job but somehow this problem was overlooked.

I love the Falco novels but this one has the funniest bits, partly because it takes place during Saturnalia. It has its grim parts, but overall Chris Rodska's narration makes the story come to life. Watch out for 6-foot turnips!

This one wraps up some persistent loose ends in a very satisfactory way, but is possibly only matched by the first book for violence. Then again, what else can you expect from a serial killer?

Armed only with a frying pan and her common sense, Tiffany Aching, a young witch-to-be, is all that stands between the monsters of Fairyland and the warm, green Chalk country that is her home. Forced into Fairyland to seek her kidnapped brother, Tiffany allies herself with the Chalk's local Nac Mac Feegle, aka the Wee Free Men, a clan of sheep-stealing, sword-wielding, six-inch-high blue men who are as fierce as they are funny.

I have listened to this twice now and it's still captivating. The beginning of Tiffany Aching's journey as a Witch of the Chalk, the Wee Free Men at times assist and at others make a nuisance of themselves, but always make me want to yell "crivens!" and root for Tiffany's success.

Biblical womanhood - the belief that God designed women to be submissive wives, virtuous mothers, and joyful homemakers - pervades North American Christianity. From choices about careers to roles in local churches to relationship dynamics, this belief shapes the everyday lives of evangelical women. Yet biblical womanhood isn't biblical, says Baylor University historian Beth Allison Barr. It was born in a series of clearly definable historical moments.
