Historia
On a cool June morning, Isa Wilde, a resident of the seemingly idyllic coastal village of Salten, is walking her dog along a tidal estuary. Before she can stop him, Isa's dog charges into the water to retrieve what first appears to be a wayward stick - and to her horror, Isa discovers it's not a stick at all...but a human bone. As her three best friends from childhood converge in Salten to comfort a seriously shaken-up Isa, terrifying discoveries are made, and their collective history slowly unravels.

Awful main character
Revisado: 01-05-25
I know people are complicated and no one is perfect in real life. And I don't expect characters to be the same way. But man, the main character of this story is just so frustratingly awful and stupid. As are most of the others. It's like watching a movie where so many things could be solved with just a few well-chosen words that no one thinks to say, except it's in extremely slow motion. I like morally ambiguous stories, but this one just got annoying after a while. Still, a good book, just frustrating.

Historia
The town of Sarlat is staging a reenactment of its liberation from the British in the Hundred Years’ War when the play’s French hero, Brice Kerquelin, is stabbed and feared fatally wounded. Is it an unfortunate prop malfunction—or something more sinister? The stricken man happens to be number two in the French intelligence service, in line for the top job. Bruno is tasked with the safety of the victim’s daughter Claire, as well as her father's old Silicon Valley buddies, ostensibly in town for a reunion.

Weird terrorism plit, some lady, same old thing
Revisado: 09-05-23
I've read every Bruno book and the blah blah terrorism, blah blah some hot lady, blah blah the end thing is getting a bit old. Can we just wrap this up? Every time Isabelle's name comes up my eyes roll to the moon. It's just getting old. Can we just ship him with Florence and let him live happily ever after? I feel like maybe there's a tiny, tiny inkling of the end game of these novels in this one, but it's just not happening. And Bruno himself is becoming more unlikeable as time goes on, like a petulant 20 year old boy who just wants to bed everyone and believes love is a fleeting feeling and not a decisive commitment. I used to think he was a wonderful, respectable character, but I find him more childish these days. Not sure I'll keep these up if the personal arc doesn't move forward into something less frustrating soon, and the story arc doesn't become a big more original again.

Really loved this series
Revisado: 07-31-23
I was a little iffy with the first book, but this has quickly become one of my favorite detective series. I especially enjoyed this one in particular. I'm gutted to see how long it's been since a new one has come out with the monumentous cliffhanger and perfect set up for the next book. It appears Khan might be sadly done with these books and we'll never get to see how the rest plays out, based on her comments on social media. It was a pleasure while it lasted, and I really hope she gets back to writing at least one more someday.

Historia
Detective Esa Khattak is in the midst of his evening prayers when he receives a phone call asking that he and his partner Detective Rachel Getty look into the death of a local man who has fallen off a cliff. At first Christopher Drayton's death - which looks like an accident - doesn't seem to warrant a police investigation, especially not from Khattak and Rachel's team, which handles minority-sensitive cases.

A great listen
Revisado: 07-09-23
I enjoyed this book, although the narrator fell a bit flat. I was looking for a new detective series and I will read the rest by this author. I was a little disappointed in Esa. It seemed odd to show such incredible weakness and poor judgement in the very first book of a series in what is presented as an otherwise stoic and wise main character. So far, he's no Gamache or Kincaid or Bruno Courrèges, which I guess is what I was expecting. And maybe I shouldn't have come in with such expectations, but I'm excited to see how his character and Rachel's character develop. Otherwise, the historical context of the book was incredible and incredibly sad, to learn about. A very well researched and written novel.

I can't take more child murdering
Revisado: 07-05-23
I slogged through the worst parts of the first book because I enjoy a good mystery, even a good gory mystery, but I find child murders a step too far for my psyche. That said, when I started listening to the second book I was hoping it would be a little less awful, but quickly learned about the impending probably brutal murder of a toddler my son's age and I just can't go on. It's too triggering and takes it a step too far. I wanted to like this series, but I won't be continuing. Kid murdering is just too vulgar and doesn't give me the peace I usually find with a good book series, especially when the author seems to do it almost excessively from one book to the other.

Historia
On a beautiful morning in mid-May, the body of a young woman is found in one of Notting Hill's private gardens. To passersby, the pretty girl in the white dress looks as if she's sleeping. But Reagan Keating has been murdered, and the lead detective, DI Kerry Boatman, turns to Gemma James for help. She and Gemma worked together on a previous investigation, and Gemma has a personal connection to the case: Reagan was the nanny of a child who attends the same dance studio as Toby, Gemma, and Kincaid's son.

I love a good conspiracy
Revisado: 03-21-23
I've been waiting for a good conspiracy that weaves books together, and this is a good one. However, the climax was...not very climactic. I would love some longer climaxes with a bit more action.

Historia
A pair of murders, a little romance, and rivals in pursuit of a long-lost vintage car of unfathomable value - Bruno, chief of police, is busy in another mystery set in the beautiful Dordogne. At an annual fete in St. Denis, Bruno's biggest worry is surviving in the rally race. The rally and a classic car parade are new to the festivities and draw a spate of outsiders with deep pockets, big-city egos, and, in the case of a young Englishman, an intriguing story. It's the tale of a Bugatti Type 57 Atlantic, lost somewhere in Southern France during World War II.

Good story, but please fix the women characters
Revisado: 09-15-22
I sit here as a happy woman with a lucrative career, bread winner, happily married with a child, love for cooking, in a home with a garden that I own, wondering again and again why in the 21st century Walker seems to think there are exactly two types of women - subservient farmer's daughters or career women who don't want a family. Then there's the random women throughout who are seemingly exactly what Bruno wants, like Florence or Fabiola, and he never even considers them. It's so frustrating and it's getting really old.

Not for me
Revisado: 03-31-22
This is my third book and I wanted to like this series as much as I love Louise Penny, but the author's increasingly hard to hide disdain for people under 30, modernity, and any progressive thinking just annoyed me too much. Not to mention, the female characters are terribly written, and narrated. Once I got to the phrase "saved me from feminism" I turned it off. This series isn't for me. Sorry, Bruno.
