“Oh, Mrs. Sirman, there’s a problem with your husband’s cremation.” “What sort of problem?” “It’s his body.” “What about it?” “It won’t burn.” And so it begins for Pam Sirman…the first step toward learning that everything she thought she knew about her husband is wrong, perhaps even his humanity. But if he's not human, what is he? Pam is one of three lives that will be drawn together by the apocalypse of the Upwelling.

Revisado: 09-10-24
First off, if you’re here because this story is on “The Secret History of the World” reading list, you could skip this and miss out on nothing more than a short story involving Repairman Jack.
The absolutely robotic narration is comically bad. It sounds like bad A.I. I’ve heard lots of bad narration and getting through to the end of this very short story was a struggle. I wish I could say it was just because of how bad the narrator is. You could easily tell what FPW wrote versus whatever was written by the other authors. Chandler as a character is every bad cliche you could jam into a femme fatale character… that acts like a man. If this were a movie Brie Larson would be cast as the very wooden Chandler. This being my introduction definitely gave me every reason to avoid the character in the future. She sounded like bad feminist fanfic from beginning to end. The fact that there’s 8 books of this blows my mind. The only thing that got me through to the end was Repairman Jack.

Historia
It’s Halloween night, 1984, in Coventry, Massachusetts, and two families are unraveling. Up and down the street, horrifying secrets are being revealed, and all the while, mixed in with the trick-or-treaters of all ages, four children who do not belong are walking door to door, merging with the kids of Parmenter Road. Children in vintage costumes with faded, eerie makeup. They seem terrified, and beg the neighborhood kids to hide them away, to keep them safe from The Cunning Man.

Mostly Enjoyable
Revisado: 01-25-24
The overall story was really good and original. The time spent developing the stories of the characters and their flaws and how both adults and children deal with the flaws of their parents and spouses felt very realistic even if it did feel like children wouldn’t say some of the things they said. The man hating lesbian teenager character felt very forced and it seemed like her character and her actions were nothing more than a thinly veiled virtue signal to show the reader the authors personal politics. If you can get past her character you shouldn’t have a problem enjoying everything this book has to offer.

What happened to the other narrator?
Revisado: 05-23-23
The overall story is as good as you’d expect if you’re a fan of the series. The narrator leaves a lot to be desired. The previous narrator of books 1-11 was considerably better and I wish they’d bring him back. The mispronunciation of some pretty basic words and acronyms drove me bonkers. If you listen to other books that use military slang for things you’ll definitely catch it. For example, this guy instead of just saying “a-cog” spells the acronym out like A.C.O.G. And that’s one example of many. Somebody needed to give this guy some basic direction.

Historia
Suburbia. Shady, tree-lined streets; well-tended lawns; and cozy homes. A nice, quiet place to grow up. Unless you are teenage Meg or her crippled sister, Susan. On a dead-end street, in the dark, damp basement of the Chandler house, Meg and Susan are left captive to the savage whims and rages of a distant aunt who is rapidly descending into madness. It is a madness that infects all three of her sons and finally the entire neighborhood. Only one troubled boy stands hesitantly between Meg and Susan and their cruel, torturous deaths.

Good story but the narrator leaves a lot to be desired.
Revisado: 04-28-22
The story was good as I was hoping it would be. If you’ve read Lonesome Dove or Dead Man’s Walk you’ll enjoy the further adventures of Augustus McCrae and Woodrow F. Call. The only problem I had was with the narrator. He drags out unnecessary words in a breathy voice. He spends most of the book reading in this breathy voice and when I first started listening I wasn’t sure I was going to get through it. If I wasn’t so interested in the story itself I probably would’ve just returned the audiobook for another one just due to the narrator.
