Historia
Lin Sukai finally sits on the throne she won at so much cost, but her struggles are only just beginning. Her people don’t trust her. Her political alliances are weak. And in the northeast of the Empire, a rebel army of constructs is gathering, its leader determined to take the throne by force. Yet an even greater threat is on the horizon, for the Alanga - the powerful magicians of legend - have returned to the Empire. They claim they come in peace, and Lin will need their help in order to defeat the rebels and restore peace. But can she trust them?

Even better
Revisado: 03-20-24
The first book was solid. This was masterful. Every turn was gripping, every resolution satisfying, the mysteries left still very mysterious. I was especially delighted to see Lin's improvement as a character - much more well defined and relatable in her new role.

Historia
How much of our daily caloric intake comes from ingesting substances that, technically speaking, do not meet traditional definitions of “food”? Chances are, if you’re eating something that came wrapped in plastic and contains a funky ingredient you don’t have in your kitchen, it's most likely—almost definitely—ultra-processed food, or UPF.

This was a bright and interesting listen that confirmed a lot of the ways I had been feeling about my food environment. I especially appreciated the many anecdotes and bits of history given to flesh out the motivations of the people who make food and the people who are subservient to the need for it (all people but some more than others)

Historia
Rife with the indulgent pleasures of life among New York’s one-percenters, Pineapple Street is a smart, escapist novel that sparkles with wit. Full of recognizable, loveable—if fallible—characters, it’s about the peculiar unknowability of someone else’s family, the miles between the haves and have-nots, and the insanity of first love—all wrapped in a story that is a sheer delight.

Substanceless
Revisado: 04-28-23
Not much to it. Just your ordinary, every day NYC elite and their failures to empathize and communicate. Plus one middle class girl without the drive to do or change much. And some Truman Capote quotes. I'd say this book is just not for everyone - the characters aren't likeable or relatable and there is no mystery or magic to otherwise invest in. But some might enjoy the ambience and the prose itself is high quality.

Historia
Most children go through a dinosaur phase. Learning all the tongue-twisting names, picking favourites based on ferocity, armour, or sheer size. For many kids this love of ‘terrible lizards’ fizzles out at some point between starting and leaving primary school. All those fancy names slowly forgotten, no longer any need for a favourite. For all those child dino fanatics who didn’t grow up to become paleontologists, dinosaurs seem like something out of mythology. They are dragons, pictures in books, abstract, other, extinct.

Enjoyable, interesting listen
Revisado: 09-06-22
Delightful gem of a book (or long form piece of journalism). Feels good to update my apparently extremely outdated information about what dinosaurs are and how they lived.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Sci-fi easy listening
Revisado: 07-06-22
Clever and science-forward, Hail Mary does not disappoint to the end. The main character is not my favorite, but his flaws are essential to the story and worth reflection. Great for a family listen or for a road trip.

Historia
After the Confederacy falls, newly freed slave Rutherford Calhoun is eager to avoid marrying a prim schoolteacher and boards the first ship he finds moored at a New Orleans port. Unbeknownst to Calhoun, the vessel is a slave ship enroute to Africa. On the return trip, Calhoun is put to work as a cabin boy and quickly assists the newly captured slaves in revolting against the drunken crew. This compelling adventure is filled with a perfect blend of colorful narrative, historical romance and suspense.

Left with a lot to think about
Revisado: 09-08-21
A worthwhile listen, to be sure. And I'd probably listen a second time, compelled by the rich language and philosophical conflicts that come up in the story. But there is also something off: the protagonist feel anachronistic in both directions. He seems modern for the 1830s but dated for 2021. The last chapter was also a big letdown for me. Still, an overall compelling and artfully written novel.

A very brief ride
Revisado: 06-08-20
It is brief to the point of wonder. Many interesting threads are teased without being unraveled, which leads to things like the relationship between caffeine and slavery being a bit cavalierly glanced over.
And then there are the long personal passages that seem like diary entries given the importance of the author's personal narrative of abstention. I wish this had been a more serious endeavor.

A Trip to the 80s and Beyond with Will Wheaton
Revisado: 05-20-20
A fun, fast-paced nostalgia trek through the eighties and the origins of video games. Not the deepest characters, but it has a good message about artificial vs real life. Will Wheaton's narrative voice is perfect in this particular role.
