Just love the characters
Revisado: 04-16-25
I love these stories because I enjoy the mystery and have grown fond of the characters. I do wish that more people replied “yes,” “yup,” or “yeah” instead of always saying “I do.” I fell like it makes sense for the lawyer to speak this way, but most real people don’t.

Historia
In a post-apocalyptic Africa, the world has changed in many ways; yet in one region genocide between tribes still bloodies the land. A woman who has survived the annihilation of her village and a terrible rape by an enemy general wanders into the desert, hoping to die. Instead, she gives birth to an angry baby girl with hair and skin the color of sand. Gripped by the certainty that her daughter is different—special—she names her Onyesonwu, which means "Who fears death?" in an ancient language.

A little too spiritual for me
Revisado: 03-11-25
This book is beautifully written, but for my plebeian tastes it was slow and boring. This is a feminist novel of magic and a journey of destiny in dystopian Africa. I like fast moving mysteries and adventures so it wasn’t my favorite.

Historia
After a career in Army Intelligence, Porter Beck is back in Nevada and doing the same lawman’s job his father once did. His sparsely populated jurisdiction is usually very quiet. But on the night of July 4, Sheriff Beck sees a strange light streak across the dark sky. He prays it won’t crash in drought-stricken Lincoln County, where the wildfires are already burning. But it does, and the resultant explosion triggers an avalanche of death and destruction in the high desert, impacting Beck’s oldest friend, the community at large, and even his sister, Brinley.

The stories are detailed and realistic, at least to this reviewer with no police expertise. I also love the personal details of the characters.

Historia
Porter Beck is the sheriff in the high desert of Nevada, north of Las Vegas. Born and raised there, he left to join the Army, where he worked in Intelligence, deep in the shadows in far off places. Now he's back home, doing the same lawman's job his father once did, before his father started to develop dementia. All is relatively quiet in this corner of the world, until on old, retired FBI agent is found killed. He was brutally tortured before he was killed and clues at the scene point to a mystery dating back to the early days of the nuclear age.

Renée Ballard and the LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Unit get a hot shot DNA connection between a recently arrested man and a serial rapist and murderer who went quiet twenty years ago. The arrested man is only twenty-four, so the genetic link must be familial: His father was the Pillowcase Rapist, responsible for a five-year reign of terror in the city of angels. But when Ballard and her team move in on their suspect, they encounter a baffling web of secrets and legal hurdles. Meanwhile, Ballard’s badge, gun, and ID are stolen.

Narrator distracting
Revisado: 10-05-24
The narrator uses British pronunciation of numerous words, which is distracting for a story set in Pennsylvania. I love a posh British accent when the story is in England, but this was mostly no accent except intermittent mispronunciation, and was set in the US. She always says “ett” for ate, and “enithin “ for anything and puts the emphasis on the wrong syllable for words like massage. There were several other non-American pronunciations which are jarring coming out of the mouths of middle class Pennsylvanians. The story was pretty good, but I would have enjoyed it better reading it myself, having grown up in PA.
