Historia
There may be no tidy solutions or pithy answers to life’s big challenges, but Michelle Obama believes that we can all locate and lean on a set of tools to help us better navigate change and remain steady within flux. In The Light We Carry, she opens a frank and honest dialogue with listeners, considering the questions many of us wrestle with: How do we build enduring and honest relationships? How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness? What do we do when it all starts to feel like too much?

More Powerful Than I Anticipated
Revisado: 09-23-23
Books written by politicians have always been somewhat boring to me, but not this one. It became my late night too early to be awake “go to” book. Which I would both read and listen to at the same time with the timer set on 15-20min. (This is great exercise for those who, wake-up at 4am. It tires the brain and you go back to sleep, while simultaneously absorbing a great story ). This kind of reading ritual made me realize that Michelle Obama not only had a story to tell, she knew how to tell it. Not only that, her wisdom and advice on how to deal in tough political and social situations are worth the time to digest with this kind of reader written by someone involved in the front lines of politics. It’s important to be able to understand how human beings deal with this kind life that most people will never know from their perspective. Michele Obama’s life lessons and the way she figured out how to thrive in the highest office in the land, is worth your time to experience.

In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Trevor Noah’s Fantastic Perspective of the World!
Revisado: 01-27-23
There’s no doubt that I am a huge Trevor Noah fan. I came to know him the day he took over THE DAILEY SHOW. Not certain he would last, I watched him every night. I couldn’t believe that a Black man from South Africa had come to grace the air ways with his innate perspective of the world, humor and intelligence. I was saddened but understood his decision to end his 7 year journey on THE DAILEY SHOW. To pay homage to him, I decided to read/listen to his book. I wanted to know how he got to such unusual life understandings. His upbringing while blessed in many ways, was laced with tragic happenings of brutality and uncertainty. We are lucky that the streets of South Africa did not consume him. We should feel fortunate to have such mind like his, walking amongst us. While I’ll miss him on the airways. I am glad that he continues sharing his humor, high standards of meticulous storytelling, and most of all, his great perspective that I am sure will continue to change the world.

RUBY DEE’s reading of this story adds additional MAGIC to this classic…
Revisado: 05-26-22
I’ve read TEWWG several times. I even put passages to music with an actor acting out sections years ago. Most recently I was commissioned to set some of the passages to music through a NEA BIG READ GRANT. It was recommended to me from another avid reader friend of mine that I listen to RUBY DEE read the story and that she brings new meaning to this classic story. I must say that RUBY DEE’s interpretation of every voice is MASTERFUL! I wish ALL AUDIBLE books could be on this level of performance! It was like hearing it fresh for the first time. What an incredible experience!

"There's no way not to suffer. But you try all kinds of ways to keep from drowning in it." The men and women in these eight short fictions grasp this truth on an elemental level, and their stories, as told by James Baldwin, detail the ingenious and often desperate ways in which they try to keep their heads above water.

Masterful Storytelling on the State of Life in Black & White America!
Revisado: 01-04-22
James Baldwin wants you to experience every aspect of race in America. James Baldwin is one of this country’s most masterful storytellers on the subject of race in America! He understands the consciousness of all people especially Black and White Americans. He can capture the landscape of each story and take you there. Painful these stories often are. While these stories take place in the 1940’s through the 1960’s, some of the racial downfalls of this country makes you understand why they are still with us today, in 2022. The final story, GOING TO MEET THE MAN, is the most painful of them all. James Baldwin makes you understand the level of hatred that some white Americans still have and where and how this hatred was created. While somewhat better in 2022, you know that many white Americans still have within them various levels of hate towards Black people. He describes these consciousness so well that it makes you wonder if some of them will ever rid themselves of this hate. He describes the pain that Black Americans live with as a result of the layered and deep systematic racism that is still with us today. James Baldwin’s writings are the example of what still needs to be forever worked on in terms of the betterment of humanity. There is still a long way to go, unfortunately.

Begin Again is one of the great books on James Baldwin and a powerful reckoning with America’s ongoing failure to confront the lies it tells itself about race. Just as in Baldwin’s “after times,” argues Eddie S. Glaude Jr., when white Americans met the civil rights movement’s call for truth and justice with blind rage and the murders of movement leaders, so in our moment were the Obama presidency and the birth of Black Lives Matter answered with the ascendance of Trump and the violent resurgence of white nationalism.

Inspiring!
Revisado: 12-24-21
Mr. Glaude’s analysis of James Baldwin’s lifespan of work and how it gives in-depth understanding to how it applies to the political and historical climate of today is brilliant! Most importantly it outlines the moral principles that this country falls short of but is truly capable of. Now if only it could fall into the hands of people who truly need to read and understand it!🧐🤔🤷🏽♀️

Historia
A gorgeous, moving memoir of how one of America's most innovative and respected journalists found his voice by coming to terms with a painful past. New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow mines the compelling poetry of the out-of-time African-American Louisiana town where he grew up - a place where slavery's legacy was felt astonishingly close, reverberating in the elders' stories and in the near-constant wash of violence.

From Memoir to Opera
Revisado: 10-01-21
I have read Charles Blows Op-Ed’s for many years. I love his perspectives. His insights are always well thought out and I believe helpful to the growth of humanity.
It was not that I read that Terrance Blanchard’s Opera was being performed by the MET that I grew curious about the premise of the Opera and the story. I was shocked that Terrance would chose the life of a journalist who’s Op-Ed’s I had been reading for years. I bought tickets for the last performance of the opera which will be Oct. 23, 2021. I decided that I wanted to know what the opera’s story would be based on and bought the book.
I was completely taken over by the way Charles described the way he grew up. I felt bad for the poverty he lived through. I could not believe that this was the same person who’s Op-Ed’s I read religiously. I found his insightfulness of his life profoundly deep. I find it miraculous that he could out line his depression as a result of his abuse so vividly, if that makes sense. His life is shining example of an African/Black Americans from the backwoods of Louisiana can rise to become highly successful. I also believe that small towns across this country are filled with far too many like Charles, who are not so lucky. While I am happy for Charles self discovery, , it makes me sad that a country that is as rich as this one is, that far too many like Charles are not as fortunate. I can’t wait to see the Opera. Charles’s life will be a game changer for humanity on so many levels. I just hope the ones that need to read a memoir like this one, get access to it. I also believe that EVERYONE no mater who you are will gain insight on humanity in ways never thought of.

Dominion tells the story of the Merian family who, at the close of the seventeenth century, settle in the wilderness of the Carolinas. Jasper is the patriarch, freed from bondage, who manages against all odds to build a thriving estate with his new wife and two sons - one enslaved, the other free. For one hundred years, the Merian family struggles against the natural (and occasionally supernatural) world, colonial politics, the injustices of slavery, the Revolutionary War and questions of fidelity and the heart.

An Amazing Span of Time!
Revisado: 07-16-19
This is my first real long length audible book experience. As well as I’ve not ever read this kind of historical fiction that dealt with African-Americans in quite this way over a span of several decades. I have read the THE THIRD LIFE OF GRANGE COPELAND ( my favorite Alice Walker novel) and ALL of Toni Morrison’s books and Zora N. Hurston’s books, DOMINION is quite different from those books. I felt compelled to listen and know about each character as well as I was not drawn into judging the decisions that each character made knowing the kinds of challenges that they faced as Black people in America at that time. I loved the symbolism and the suggestion of the ghost OLD LOWE and what it could have represented. I loved the dignity that each character possessed. I did have some issues on how one of the characters died. As I think on that death, while I didn’t like it, I understand why it’s a part of this story. I tried to understand that period of time a little better through what was introduced to me in scenes that I don’t read about often. I felt the horrors of slavery and war without it being overwhelming. As well as how this family had so much strength to rise above both slavery and war on such a variety of levels, even though these characters were not without often incredible faults. Maybe the author was trying to let the readers know that observance of these many aspects of humankind must be respected regardless of where they’re from and how they got there. While this is a book filled with detail around just what was going on in terms of the scenery around untamed wilderness, farming, raising cattle, the building of homes from scratch, lawlessness and what ALL that’s involved with this period of time, some may find the book slow moving. However I felt that the author wanted you to experience the fact that compared to today, things not only moved extremely slow, but those with great direction in their lives worked with purpose, real goals and perseverance. The observation on how personal relationships came to be, was also quite fascinating. The author really examines intimacy from a historical perspective that is so revealing and honest.
I can’t imagine the research that went into this. This is my second Calvin Baker novel. The first book of his that I read was GRACE. In both of these books, he deals with the issue of race from a perspective that makes you often ignore it, because it’s only mentioned every now and then. While I’m not sure how realistic that is, I like how he challenges us to think that way. It’s like he is trying to look at the definition of DOMINION and GRACE and the complexities involved in such words and how it applies to humankind AS A WHOLE and not just based on the color of ones skin or culture. These days, it’s important that we are reminded of this every minute of the day, every day!
