Historia
Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

Historia
For generations, everything has been getting faster, better, and cheaper. Finally, we reached the point that almost anything you could ever want could be sent to your home within days - even hours - of when you decided you wanted it. America made that happen, but now America has lost interest in keeping it going.

A Stunning Work
Revisado: 05-09-23
Defines the stage on which Jared Diamond’s insights into human society and Yuval Noah Harari’s perspectives on human behavior must live. Frightening! Should we just welcome artificial intelligence and government by robots?

Historia
Understanding how brains produce consciousness is one of the great scientific challenges of our age. Some philosophers argue that consciousness is something "extra", beyond the physical workings of the brain. Others think that if we persist in our standard scientific methods, our questions about consciousness will eventually be answered. And some suggest that the mystery is so deep, it will never be solved.

Challenging details with periodic “aha moments”
Revisado: 04-24-23
At times so very satisfying. Like a well-written mystery story. Countless clues, but whatever does it all mean! How will it end? I guess we’ll all know as soon as Mr. Goff does.

For Franny, the end of everything is just the beginning of her adventure. The world as we know it is no more. Cities are mobile. Electricity is rare. Reading is a relic of the past. After an explosive encounter with a mysterious stranger, Franny, a 14-year-old orphan girl, embarks on an epic quest to find the mysterious pilots who steer the cities, hoping that if she finds them, she will get answers about her family's past - and the world's future.

Couldn’t stay with it
Revisado: 03-15-23
Ken Liu’s stories can be a challenge for me. No reflection on his work, but I need to be able to hang on a word or phase, to lock in on the visual image. But that hesitation puts me a word or phrase behind and I can’t catch up. Ken Liu wastes not a moment. I’m comfortable with non-fiction audiobooks, but I guess I need book in hand for fantasy or dystopian tales.

Historia
In his earlier best sellers Guns, Germs and Steel and Collapse, Jared Diamond transformed our understanding of what makes civilizations rise and fall. Now, in the final audiobook in this monumental trilogy, he reveals how successful nations recover from crisis through selective change - a coping mechanism more commonly associated with personal trauma.

Another wonderful Jared Diamond story.
Revisado: 02-16-23
A tougher reach to draw conclusions about the future than Professor Diamond faced with earlier books. But, as always, he’s honest about the value of more extensive research. He does provide a clear warning about what’s at stake for America. And everything he warns about has only gotten more serious since publication of UPHEAVAL. I can see a tie back to COLLAPSE. That’s frightening.

Ten years in the making and already hailed as a classic, The Passion of the Western Mind is truly a complete liberal education in a single volume.

Stunning in it’s depth
Revisado: 01-30-23
Brilliant use of callback to earlier stages in the historical narrative to reset the foundation supporting the next major stage. Avoids the sense of rambling, “and this happened then this happened…”, found in so many history books. A cohesive trip through centuries of human thought, closing with a tantalizing “what comes next.”

Historia
Must the sins of America's past poison its hope for the future? Lately the American Left, withdrawing into the ivied halls of academe to rue the nation's shame, has answered "yes" in both word and deed. In Achieving Our Country, one of America's foremost philosophers challenges this lost generation of the Left to understand the role it might play in the great tradition of democratic intellectual labor that started with writers like Walt Whitman and John Dewey.

At times amazing
Revisado: 01-16-23
Some of the story was difficult to follow: some terminology and the huge list of source philosophers. But some stunning moments as Rorty offered predictions about modern America that we are living through today. And bits of hope that American Democracy can survive.

Historia
In this classic work that continues to inspire its many fans, James Lovelock deftly explains his idea that life on Earth functions as a single organism. Written for the non-scientist, Gaia is a journey through time and space in search of evidence with which to support a new and radically different model of our planet. In contrast to conventional belief that living matter is passive in the face of threats to its existence, the book explores the hypothesis that the Earth's living matter - air, ocean, and land surfaces - forms a complex system that has the capacity to keep the Earth a fit place for life.

Historia
Here is an impassioned plea for reason in a world divided by faith. This important and timely work delivers a startling analysis of the clash of faith and reason in today's world. Harris offers a vivid historical tour of mankind's willingness to suspend reason in favor of religious beliefs, even when those beliefs are used to justify harmful behavior and sometimes heinous crimes.

Brought so much together
Revisado: 12-27-22
Focuses on the issues rather than jumping to solutions when so many, in America at least, deny that there’s a problem. Like his contemporaries, Yuval Noah Harari and Jerod Diamond, Sam Harris doesn’t hold out much hope for humanity. A rewrite of this book today would likely be even darker.
