Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Good beginning, poor end

Excellent background and start - the end felt like a useless lecture (instead of personal helps). Excited, then disappointed.

Historia
For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Ok, not great to be listened to…
Revisado: 07-13-24
Too many “he said, “she said”, it gets really redundant when listening for hours, begins to really grate after about two.
Interesting story, not much back story there (and what WAS there I had to back track many times to catch, which is frustrating while listening, because these little bits of back story are hard to find). In 20+ hours of listening (I was on a long drive) that’s a LOT to search through. I finally figured out that most of these “tidbits” were usually just before chapter breaks (after a good 15 hours in, and back tracking many times). That would have been helpful to know BEFORE starting the listen (usually one doesn’t need to pay such close attention to chapter breaks - and when we do, as with older novels, the book may have a chapter break and THEN an important tid-bit). Aristotle often has a lead sentence, Les Misérables has chapter subtitles, etc.
Generally good story flow, although there were a lot of ‘miraculous jumps’ in a VERY long story line. The characters didn’t have much in the way of development, felt like many of them were just backdrop to the action. Perhaps that’s common for the genre?
Really weak female character, has this guy ever walked through any slums? Women there are STRONG.

Productivity and effective time management end with multitasking. The false idea that multitasking is productive has become even more prevalent and damaging to our productivity and well-being since the first edition of The Myth of Multitasking was published in 2008. In this revised and updated second edition, author and productivity expert Dave Crenshaw provides a solution for the chaos of distraction that multitasking creates - and a way to combat the temptation to constantly switch between tasks.

Curiosity stirs the soul of every human. Who has not wondered about how the human body works? Can we drown from drinking too much water? What is a black hole? Can black holes allow us to time travel? Is spontaneous human combustion possible? Do identical twins have the same fingerprints? How do scientists age dinosaur bones? How does gravity make things fall? Why do sunflowers always face the sun? What about a man flying with wings? How big would those wings have to be? How tall can a human grow? Why are tennis balls fuzzy? What happens to the white when snow melts?

Such a sad representation of science teachers
Revisado: 12-29-23
I do a lot of reading and listening, including science related reading, for my own entertainment and edification (just completed Peter Burke’s excellent ‘Polymath’ on Audible). And as an instructor myself, I am always concerned about making learning experiences accurate, informative, and stimulating for engagement. I was embarrassed for this man.
The information is simplistic and superficial, with little bits of interesting content occasionally dropped in, often with inaccurate or mispronounced words, names, and/or stories. The tone is redundant and boring.
I’m not sure if he was trying to be informative, or interesting, or just trying to impress, but much of the information would be much clearer (and possibly much more accurate) just taken from Google or Google Scholar.
For example, this “science teacher” refers to Aristotle’s ‘golden mean’ in a way doesn’t seem to reflect any understanding that Aristotle was referring to an ETHICAL dilemma when using the term; “Virtue is the golden mean between two vices, the one of excess and the other of deficiency.”
This is the first time, after many years of listening on Audible, I have had to stop before the book was finished, and I was gusting up beyond 2.0 speed by the end, in an attempt to just get it over. I just couldn’t do it.

The curtain is about to rise, say Pine and Gilmore, on the Experience Economy, a new economic era in which every business is a stage, and companies must design memorable events for which they charge admission. With The Experience Economy, Pine and Gilmore explore how successful companies, using goods as props and services as the stage, create experiences that engage customers in an inherently personal way.

The Bridge Still Holds!
Revisado: 12-22-23
18 years after its’ original publication date, this book STILL holds excellent counsel on how to stimulate and entice your business - and all of your interactions - to great success!
When I originally read the HBR article, almost 25 years ago, and again, when I found myself discussing this book 11 years later, as part of a Masters in Leadership program, I was persuaded. But I couldn’t really buy into the performance mandates for the last level, as valid (or perhaps as necessary/useful) for everyone.
Now, after personally excelling in several unrelated areas over the years (including several business successes and an ABD in educational leadership) I am seeing the recommendations at the end of this book with different eyes!
In fact, its’ predictions have come through with amazing accuracy, and its’ recommendations are right on the mark for today’s cultural milieu. We ARE in a performance economy, even though many people do not realize it. And understanding this level, thoroughly, makes a HUGE difference for us a leaders and as guides.
Just for kicks, I went back and reread the 1998 HBR article. This material has held up amazing well, and the book is well worth reviewing (or re-reading again) for new “aha!” moments.
Messers Pine and Gilmore, well done!

The revered author’s definitive collection of short fiction, which explores enduring spiritual and science fiction themes such as space, time, reality, fantasy, God, and the fate of humankind. As powerful, inventive, and profound as his theological and philosophical works, The Dark Tower reveals another side of Lewis’s creative mind and his longtime fascination with reality and spirituality. It is ideal listening for fans of J. R. R. Tolkien, Lewis’s longtime friend and colleague.

Delightful seeing into Lewis’ imagination!
Revisado: 12-22-23
I really enjoyed the background on “rescuing these pieces” from the fire after Lewis’ death, and thinking through what he might have done with these bits.
I particularly enjoyed thinking about time with him, and who might be on the moon, as well as the twist on the Trojan war story.
Yes, they are just pieces, but they beautifully demonstrate Lewis’ excellent storytelling and imagination skills, yet again.
Thank you for bringing this to audio!!

Set in the pre-Christian world of Glome on the outskirts of Greek civilization, it is a tale of two princesses: the beautiful Psyche, who is loved by the god of love himself, and Orual, Psyche's unattractive and embittered older sister, who loves Psyche with a destructive possessiveness. Her frustration and jealousy over Psyche's fate sets Orual on the troubled path of self-discovery. Lewis's last work of fiction, this is often considered his best by critics.

Months after the Waterless Flood pandemic has wiped out most of humanity, Toby and Ren have rescued their friend Amanda from the vicious Painballers. They return to the MaddAddamite cob house, newly fortified against man and giant pigoon alike. Accompanying them are the Crakers, the gentle, quasi-human species engineered by the brilliant but deceased Crake. Their reluctant prophet, Snowman-the-Jimmy, is recovering from a debilitating fever, so it's left to Toby to preach the Craker theology, with Crake as Creator.

So sorry I spent the time, and the money.
Revisado: 07-03-23
I bought all three so I listened to all three. Such a disappointment.
This might have been a good second book. Everything tied up in a neat little bow. But it was SO unrealistic, especially for the unlimited possibilities of a future world. Everyone in this story is already in the undergirding (although invisible) storylines. It’s just too limited to be realistic.
Such possibilities, Such great leads, so many opportunities wasted. I’m sorry I bought all three books, I’m sad for a woman I considered to be such a good writer, to be building such an incomplete world, such incomplete characters - caricatures, really.
Too bad. I bought these books, sorry I listened all the way through (although I kept hoping, throughout) wish I could return them.
Atwood was SUCH a good writer, now she’s fallen into just keeping the stock selling. Heartbreaking, really.

Historia
The long-awaited new novel from Margaret Atwood. The Year of the Flood is a dystopic masterpiece and a testament to her visionary power. The times and species have been changing at a rapid rate, and the social compact is wearing as thin as environmental stability. Adam One, the kindly leader of the God's Gardeners - a religion devoted to the melding of science and religion, as well as the preservation of all plant and animal life - has long predicted a natural disaster that will alter Earth as we know it. Now it has occurred, obliterating most human life.

Revisado: 07-02-23
Disjointed, with odd musical interludes (Atwood should probably stick to fiction) VERY slow (even at 1.8) no real end, at the end.. it’s sad, really…
