As the first anniversary of the formation of the Kings Lake murder squad approaches, there is a problem—they've run out of murders. As a result, they are given the task of reviewing unsolved cold cases. One of these comes back to life in unexpected ways as the team try to discover the identity of the young woman whose body was found in the Norfolk countryside two decades ago. And even if they can give her a name, how can they possibly find her killer after so many years?

Enjoyable listening experience…
Revisado: 05-14-22
The Peter Grainger books are entertaining & contain beautifully written descriptions of the countryside that is the setting for this fine series.
Gildart Jackson, narrator, contributes strongly to this excellent Audible experience. His style & interpretation of the key characters combine with Grainger’s insightful & intelligent writing to put this into the top rating it deserves.

Historia
When she stumbles across the ad, she’s looking for something else completely. But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss - a live-in nannying post, with a staggeringly generous salary. And when Rowan Caine arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten - by the luxurious “smart” home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture-perfect family. What she doesn’t know is that she’s stepping into a nightmare - one that will end with a child dead and herself in prison awaiting trial for murder.

Story not Ruth Ware’s best, & while I see the narrator was complimented by many reviewers, her “creak, creak, creak” was so irritating I tried to fast forward just to avoid hearing it after a while...

DI Vera Stanhope is not one to make friends easily, but her hippy neighbors keep her well supplied in homebrew and conversation, and somehow bonds have formed. When one of them goes missing, Vera tracks the young woman down to the Writer’s House, a country retreat where aspiring authors work on their stories. Things get complicated when a body is discovered, and Vera’s neighbor is found with a knife in her hand.

Very well done
Revisado: 04-28-18
Though I had seen 1 episode of a televised version of another of this author’s books (starring Brenda Blethyn in the Vera role), this was my first direct experience of Ann Cleeves work.
I thought the narration was excellent & the mystery held its interest throughout. If you enjoy mystery writing, this is terrific. Highly recommend you experience this fine match of storytelling and talented narrator. The author is skillful and I’ll eagerly look for more of her work. The narrator interpreted characters so well and conveyed the setting & countryside of that area of England, which is also a key part of this writer’s work.

Fascinating Listening...
Revisado: 03-31-17
Dr Anthony Clare's conversations with various public figures are an intriguing insight the individuals he interviews.
His professional skill in respectfully honing in on the essence of what makes these people 'tick' is akin to being in the audience at the theatre for a top notch dramatic play - the difference being it isn't fiction. Even if some of these celebrities are unknown to you, their stories will keep your interest.

Historia
Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first Lo's stay is nothing but pleasant: The cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, and gray skies fall.

Author builds suspense and creates absorbing story
Revisado: 08-05-16
What did you love best about The Woman in Cabin 10?
The shipboard setting is authentically portrayed & effectively draws the reader in to that particular environment she's created. Well done.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes - it was taut & compelling to imagine the resolution of the narrative...
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Imogen Church?
I can't come up with an alternate casting, but Narrator came off as too coarse in her interpretation, somehow. Performance wasn't a match altogether for me with the character's supposed career choice & intelligence. Also "physical discomfort details" (emphasized excessively perhaps by the author) were over acted & the repetition made these descriptions ineffective after a while.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The desperation to escape a claustrophobic situation.
Any additional comments?
I like this author, but overall I think I'd have preferred to read this book rather than listen. I do think it would make a great movie! But It was a tough story to narrate and I felt the interpretation was too raucous & unsettling to showcase this particular book.

Revisado: 07-31-16
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
a friend recommended it to me;while I wouldn't be over the top in recommending,, it builds good momentum...an 'I'can't put it down' sustaining of narrative.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Most interesting: the tension & indignation that builds for the heroine! Least satisfying was (Spoiler Alert!) that the villain(ess) didn't get her 'come uppance' & got away with causing havoc 😕
Which scene was your favorite?
When Grace finally reached the haven of her friend's house
Was Saving Grace worth the listening time?
Yes, entertaining...
Any additional comments?
Credibility of Grace returning to her own home after betrayals she endured there?

Historia
Lucy Barton is recovering slowly from what should have been a simple operation. Her mother, to whom she hasn’t spoken for many years, comes to see her. Gentle gossip about people from Lucy’s childhood in Amgash, Illinois, seems to reconnect them, but just below the surface lie the tension and longing that have informed every aspect of Lucy’s life: her escape from her troubled family, her desire to become a writer, her marriage, her love for her two daughters. Knitting this powerful narrative together is the brilliant storytelling voice of Lucy herself.

Not for me!
Revisado: 04-14-16
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I longed for a shred of humor and hope in this story. I might have enjoyed it more if I wasn't so completely turned off by the voice of the narrator.
What was most disappointing about Elizabeth Strout’s story?
There was no satisfaction, but a lot of sadness. The kind doctor in the hospital was one of the only uplifting characters, the others seemed mired in drudgery and hopeless outcomes.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Her style brought such a depressing mood into each chapter that it was hard to continue with it. The voice adopted for the mother grated especially. If I'd been reading, instead of listening to an audio version, I feel I may have found some moments to elevate & inspire, but this was a grim depiction.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Sadness, disappointment, and even when the author spoke of her 'joy' in certain passages, the narrator totally squashed any smidge of joy that might have come through. I'd be interested to know if the narrator herself liked the book & felt it had any uplifting moments.
Any additional comments?
The author's work was not well served by this narrator's interpretation of her written words.

Narration lessened my enjoyment of this book.
Revisado: 08-30-15
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Not about the book itself.
Would you be willing to try another book from Lisa Scottoline? Why or why not?
Yes; I like this author & have enjoyed her other books.
What didn’t you like about George Newbern’s performance?
I found it monotonous and not suited to this book. The narrator 'makes or breaks' the experience.
Was Every Fifteen Minutes worth the listening time?
Not really for me. I think I'd have enjoyed it lot more it with another person reading. There was nothing wrong per se with this performer, but certain voices are more appealing than others, which admittedly is a personal preference for any listener. His interpretation of how the different characters voices should sound did not mesh at all with my own expectations & it detracted from my overall experience of this audio version.
