Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Breathtaking
Revisado: 08-18-21
I knew the broad outlines of this story, but this book brought it so vividly to life, that even knowing the outcome, I was on the edge of my seat throughout.
The slightly old-fashioned melodrama of the prose suits the story very well and it was read magnificently.
Highly recommend!

Historia
England, May 1536. Anne Boleyn is dead, decapitated in the space of a heartbeat by a hired French executioner. As her remains are bundled into oblivion, Thomas Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The blacksmith's son from Putney emerges from the spring's bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry VIII, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen. Cromwell is a man with only his wits to rely on; he has no great family to back him, no private army.

Glittering
Revisado: 07-25-20
An extremely satisfying conclusion to this great feat of storytelling and historical imagination.
I read the first two books in print, but am eager to revisit them now through the medium of Ben Miles’ brilliant reading, which gives every character their own distinct voice, and brings Thomas Cromwell even more vividly to life than Hilary Mantel’s words, which created him as a deeply interesting and touching presence.

Historia
The second volume of Sir Philip Pullman’s The Book of Dust sees Lyra, now 20 years old, and her daemon Pantalaimon, forced to navigate their relationship in a way they could never have imagined, and drawn into the complex and dangerous factions of a world that they had no idea existed. Pulled along on his own journey too is Malcolm: once a boy with a boat and a mission to save a baby from the flood, now a man with a strong sense of duty and a desire to do what is right.

Thrilling, disturbing story breathtakingly well read.
Revisado: 10-16-19
A thrilling new chapter in the story of Lyra Silvertongue, and one quite unlike the ones that have come before, being far more akin to our world of struggle and political horrors and adult pain, as it must be, being the story of a young woman caught in events far broader and more evil than any she has encountered before. The vast cast is brilliantly given voice by Michael Sheen, probably the best audiobook narrator I have listened to. Every character has their own voice, every scene is described with tenderness, or humour or in breathtaking vivid action.
A triumph whose conclusion cannot come soon enough.

Brilliant story, moving narration
Revisado: 09-27-19
I loved La Belle Sauvage when I read it, but Michael Sheen's Reading took it to a new level.
Quite simply, the best reading I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing.
I’m looking forward eagerly to the next in the series, both to find out how the story continues, and to hear Michael Sheen's narration.

The funniest, sweetest play ever put on radio. I can listen to it again and again. The characters, the performances and the silly word games are just a part of its loveliness.

Historia
Dean Jocelin has a vision: that God has chosen him to erect a great spire on his cathedral. His mason anxiously advises against it, for the old cathedral was built without foundations. Nevertheless, the spire rises octagon upon octagon, pinnacle by pinnacle, until the stone pillars shriek and the ground beneath it swims. Its shadow falls ever darker on the world below, and on Dean Jocelin in particular. From the author of Lord of the Flies, The Spire is a dark and powerful portrait of one man's will, and the folly that he creates.

Twisty and dark
Revisado: 03-29-15
Twisty and dark story with a building sense of doom. Wonderfully read by Benedict Cumberbatch, who employs a wide range of voices and creates the dean's character brilliantly.
