I’m really enjoying this story

Honest critique from a guy with almost 700 titles in his audible.

Occasionally the path feels a little unclear. With what I would consider a shorter listening time for each book it almost feels like a monster of the week type of situations sometimes. But……

The story is connecting and flowing. And I like the adaptability of Max. He is a good representation of what people want a “grey Jedi” to be in my opinion. Overall he has a lightside moral compass but he doesn’t buy into the system totally, he stays skeptical, and he’s willing to be a little dark to get the job the done. Or very dark if necessary. On top of that, he isn’t just crazy overpowered, but still better than most, and can figure out how to come out on top.

Good MC

Finally turned it on and I actually got sucked in. It’s a litrpg but it’s not driven by the constant stats. The MC is strong and confident but he’s still earning power. Cool situation for the story to take place.

Giving it 4 stars because i just came off a series with 20-40 hr books and that felt too quick. I listen to hundreds of books. I’d picked this one up a while ago because I like the synopsis.

This has been a great series. I liked that there were whole chapters for the character stat sheets. With all honesty, I would just skip the chapter most of the time. But the characters, the story, the powers, all great.

Don’t let this deter you

I just couldn’t stand the main character all the way up to the end of the book. I started and stopped the book multiple times. He’s whiny, maintains the whole “why me, I don’t want anything to do with this” stance the entire book. He never gets any better. It really killed the whole vibe of any cool concepts that the book had. I was just trying to finish the last hour and maybe get the next book to see if Gabe comes around at the end and accepts it all and quits being such a whiny coward. But no he doesn’t. No offense to the author. But I don’t understand these 5 star reviews. I listen to audiobooks on a daily basis. I have over 600 titles in my library. This character should be the whiny side character to the main. He is 100 percent insufferable.

Long time listener of all action, fantasy, litrpg. This book grabbed my interest and kept. First time in weeks I’ve been sucked in like this. Love it

Great combo

I’m on book 3 right now. I’m not really into books about high schoolers, but this book was a great combination of serious adult themes and situations with some good humor. When there was action it could be pretty brutal and when it was day to day stuff it was pretty funny. Great narrator as well. Since I have nearly 600 books in my library I’d like to think I’m pretty well versed in the fantasy/action/sci-fi audiobook world. It’s not a lit-rpg but the way the sarcastic humor mixes with serious drama will give you He Who Fights With Monsters vibes.

I was in a book hole before this book, listening to minutes-hours of books and moving on waiting for something to catch. This one caught.

Captivating

Cool premise. Good writing. The MC’s origin arc can be irritating at times. Classic character “why me!!”. But the overarching plot line and development of the character kept me dialed in listening. Worth it. I just started playing the second book.

I don’t listen to music or podcasts anymore. I pretty much always have an audiobook series going. Mostly fantasy/action/scifi type stuff.

This I wasn’t sure what to think about this book but I started it when at time when I was in a series slump. And it just kept me listening. I even thought about not immediately buying the second book but towards the end I kept thinking… well dammm I how’s this scenario going to play itself out.

Excellent. Highly recommend. I listen to audiobooks constantly. I’ve listened to a lot of great series. (Echos saga, dotf, he who fights with monsters, battleborn etc). This one has to up in my favorites category now. Lots of action. Some political intrigue. Good relationships and character development. MC is a bamf but not in a toooo over powered way. He’s just good, dedicated, and skilled with good friends. Very good series.

Really cool main character and story setting. Similarities to all vampire hunter, Blade-like stories but with its own dystopian future tone. Really cool.
