Historia
For almost a decade, I've been the secret pen pal of a convict—my best friend's father. All I wanted was to help bridge the gap between father and son. But the innocent act soon turns into more. Through our letters, I am able to be the brave, confident guy I am in fact, not. So what if I fibbed a little when I sent him a false photograph of me? And reinvented myself in those letters? After all, what's the harm when Griff will never be released from prison?

Excellent Narration, very Cliched storyline
Revisado: 09-02-24
While the narration was excellent, the plot was really cliched. the sex scenes were a bit repetitive. If the central character, Scotty had been a decent friend to either of the others and respected his alleged best-friend's wishes, there would be no story to tell. Instead, he chooses to interfere and causes even more pain and trauma to everyone. You Don't heal someone else's trauma by taking away their choices and their agency. I returned this title.

Historia
While I've always known my infatuation with Cash and Ford was meant to remain an unfulfilled dream, I never really lost hope. Hope that the two men, twice my age, would ever see me as more than just a kid. As more than just their best friend's son. I'm not a kid anymore, and at twenty-one, they're about to see that little meek and quiet Ben is old enough for many things. Old enough to finally attract their attention. And frankly, old enough to know better. To know that these stolen touches and lustful trysts behind closed doors could never really amount to more.

Too much sex...not enough story
Revisado: 04-09-24
This book opens with sex and never really stops. It comes at the expense of plot and there isn't enough story. This is the first C.R. title I am probably going to return,
I was bored by Chapter 3 because even with the over-abundance of sex, it gets to be REALLY repetitive. So repetitive I was fast forwarding through the seemingly endless sex scenes just to try and find some story, There isn't much of it in this book,

Historia
The year is 1921. Lesley Hamlyn and her husband, Robert, a lawyer and war veteran, are living at Cassowary House on the Straits Settlement of Penang. When “Willie” Somerset Maugham, a famed writer and old friend of Robert’s, arrives for an extended visit with his secretary Gerald, the pair threatens a rift that could alter more lives than one. Maugham, one of the great novelists of his day, is beleaguered: Having long hidden his homosexuality, his unhappy and expensive marriage of convenience becomes unbearable after he loses his savings—and the freedom to travel with Gerald.

A good story, but very hard to listen to
Revisado: 12-19-23
I couldn't finish audiobook, its very hard to listen to. The alternating readers each has a difficult time narrating a stammer and it was hard not to be constantly pulled out of the story. This is one of those times where it would be best to read the print version.

One or the other, but never both.
Revisado: 08-28-23
Some of the stories are good but badly narrated and some of the stories are just plain bad but well narrated. None of the stories were anything like the genuine article. Authors who did incorporate small details from the original stories seemed to go out of there way to get them wrong, and the whole thing felt like a pale imitation.

NOT UNABRIDGED
Revisado: 12-17-22
This is only a little over half of the stories in the printed Anthology - many of the titles/authors mentioned in the introduction are NOT included in the audiobook. Don't purchase this based on the sample provided either, the narration is very un-even (some readers are MUCH better than the others. Its the same with the audio quality.

Historia
On Battersea Reach, a mixed bag of the temporarily lost and the patently eccentric live on houseboats, rising and falling with the tide of the Thames. There is good-natured Maurice, by occupation a male prostitute, by chance a receiver of stolen goods. And Richard, an ex-navy man whose boat, much like its owner, dominates the Reach.

A well-written story, that goes nowhere
Revisado: 11-07-22
Well-written, interesting characters, and a great setting. So much potential that just never really went anywhere. I got bored, stopped paying attention and had to re-listen to chapters.

Historia
Sharply observant and wickedly funny, E.F. Benson's six Mapp and Lucia novels satirize the upper-middle-class social climbers in 1920s and '30s rural England. Games of bridge and cups of tea fuel hilarious gossip and vindictive plots a-plenty. It is a masterfully sustained spotlight on the minutiae of village life - a clever and ultimately heartwarming series that seems tailor-made for audio. This second volume contains the second three books.

Grateful for an unabridged reading, bad narration.
Revisado: 08-05-21
Georgina Sutton did such a great job with "Diary of a Provincial Lady" that I was thrilled to see she was doing my favorite series. Sadly the narration is flat, and rather monotonous. She either didn't understand the stories are satirical, or didn't get the jokes, because this was a joyless rendition. Prunella Scales and Geraldine McEwen both did SO much better.

In the late summer of 1913, George Sawle brings his Cambridge schoolmate—a handsome, aristocratic young poet named Cecil Valance—to his family’s modest home outside London for the weekend. George is enthralled by Cecil, and soon his sixteen-year-old sister, Daphne, is equally besotted by him and the stories he tells about Corley Court, the country estate he is heir to.

Long, disjointed ramble that went nowhere
Revisado: 01-30-21
This is the only novel by Hollinghurst I have not enjoyed. While he usually takes his time telling a story, he has (until now) eventually gotten there. Hollinghurst novels do as a rule change perspective and shift in time, and it usually works out. This novel's parts don't really hang together, there is little chance for story or character development as everything shifts as soon as the reader begins to figure out who the new characters and places are, and how they relate to the previous parts of the novel.

Horrible Narration - Won't finish listening
Revisado: 11-24-20
The Narrators own voice is fine, but the voices used for the books characters is very harsh. It somehow manages to be grating, shrill, gruff and squeaky all at once. The women's voices all sound dry and raspy as well, both Precious and Grace sound like they are over one hundred years old. Its just too much of a distraction to focus on the actual story.
Audible should refund everyone who purchased this book. The narration is beyond unacceptable.
