Unsatisfying
Revisado: 07-10-22
I'm not very good at predicting plots, it's not something I try to do, but with this book you can't help but see it coming from miles away. It made it difficult to listen to all the details in between the setup and the finale; it was a forgone conclusion that I wasn't particularly interested in getting to. I do think the author is talented at writing dialogue, and the VAs did a great job.
All in all, I read a lot of books in this genre, and this one did not grab my attention. I considered not finishing it, but I let it run in the background while doing chores. That should give you an idea of the investment this book will demand on your attention.

Solid Scifi

Somewhat dry in its delivery and less dramatic considering I've seen the film first, it was still a well made, engaging search for meaning.

Random mishmash
Revisado: 05-21-21
The book was compelling such that I wanted to finish it. The first half of the book set up the characters and the mystery nicely. I very much enjoyed getting the perspective of a homeless woman; it moved me.
But in the second half, characters started doing things that seemed off for who I thought they were. Peoples' motives didn't quite add up. And then, all of a sudden, everything blew up and then ended abruptly. Now that I've finished it, I don't know who the book was about. Who was I supposed to have empathized with? Why did any of this happen?
There is a lot of potential here, but the plot ultimately felt very piecemeal, impersonal, and even random.
The voice actress didn't do anything notable, which is perfectly satisfactory to me. I wasn't blown away by her different voices - the men all sounded very similar - but nothing she did detracted from the story.

Uninspiring

I really didn't feel any connection to any of the characters. Everyone was so professional and clear in word and action. It simply seemed a stereotypical fantasy novel.

Historia
In her groundbreaking reporting, Naomi Klein introduced the term "disaster capitalism." Whether covering Baghdad after the U.S. occupation, Sri Lanka in the wake of the tsunami, or New Orleans post-Katrina, she witnessed something remarkably similar. People still reeling from catastrophe were being hit again, this time with economic "shock treatment," losing their land and homes to rapid-fire corporate makeovers. The Shock Doctrine retells the story of the most dominant ideology of our time, Milton Friedman's free market economic revolution.

Necessary

I struggled to finish this novel, simply off the sheer depressing nature of capitalism it exposes. It is ABSOLUTELY necessary, though, for the informed citizen.

Excellent window into voter suppression
Revisado: 03-03-21
This short audiobook is a really well-rounded glimpse into the long history and damaging present of voter suppression, targeting poor people and people of color. I don't normally hear from activists, singers, and athletes all in one book, so the variety was welcomed. Keep in mind, it's not meant to be a full documentation of all the instances of voter suppression. I see some reviews claiming that this is biased and there's no such thing as institutional racism. Sadly, these people were the ones bringing their bias, or they didn't get past the first monologue, because there is a fact-based intro into some of the history of institutional racism that not everyone knows about. If it sounds outlandish, that's because you're a good person who wouldn't mistreat people that way and you don't know anyone who has been mistreated based on race. But trust, these horrible things only scratch the surface, and they are very real
