Historia
The 14th century reflects two contradictory images: on the one hand, a glittering time of crusades and castles, cathedrals and chivalry, and the exquisitely decorated Books of Hours; and on the other, a time of ferocity and spiritual agony, a world of chaos and the plague.

The grande dame of history brings it together
Revisado: 10-14-19
Much of this vast subject gets overwhelmed by the details. A century torn by death, plague, famine and war exacerbated by politics based more on personal whim than on any effort to make internal or international relations work is an uncomfortable mirror to our own. By the end Tuchman delivers a tale with much to teach us, filled with personality and warmth. I’m glad to have read it.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

I have rarely encountered a masterpiece of writing and his profound- and to have it speak to me so personally is world- changing. It is gritty and does not deny he ugliness and pain of life as catastrophe. Nor the salvation of love, of friendship , of beauty. Somehow it is virtue to survive it.

With his characteristic eyebrow-raising behavior, Richard P. Feynman once provoked the wife of a Princeton dean to remark, "Surely you're joking, Mr. Feynman!" But the many scientific and personal achievements of this Nobel Prize-winning physicist are no laughing matter. Here, woven with his scintillating views on modern science, Feynman relates the defining moments of his accomplished life.

Revisado: 06-27-19
It is easy to dismiss this autobiography as the tootling of a vain intellectual. But as time goes on it is a portrait of a man with man who is prepared to work for his many talents. What impels him is unbounded curiosity. In a way this should impel everyone who hopes to enjoy worthwhile work.

When Marie Colvin was killed by an IED in Homs, Syria, in 2012, at age 56, the world lost one of its most fearless, accomplished, and iconoclastic war correspondents, an eye-patch wearing, party-throwing, and risk-taking female combat reporter who covered the most significant and destructive global calamities of her lifetime. In Extremis: The Life and Death of War Reporter Marie Colvin, written by Colvin’s friend and prizewinning fellow reporter Lindsey Hilsum, is a thrilling and powerful investigation into Colvin’s epic life and tragic death.

Revisado: 01-18-19
Honest and painful view of a woman who was part of all of us fierce females of the sixties. Marie Colvin sought refuge in all of our escapes and rebellions- sex and drugs and alcohol and parties. But where she displayed her greatest courage was not only on the front lines - it was in her internal battle for love and self acceptance. Her rejection of fear and danger on behalf of those who pay the price of being pawns in the wars of super powers was necessary to the larger world and to the world of herself. She collected the injuries of war. She could not treat them all. She did triumph in friends and in her work.
Lindsay Hilaum has written a fine and compassionate story. It is tragedy on the grand scale. Thank you. you are more than equAl to the task.

A warm complex story that is as much family history that brings to life the times that made our progenitors as well as the courageous and sweet path of the protagonist. It is frankly wonderful.

The Winter Queen of Faerie has manipulated Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden into accepting a case to solve a murder and stop a war between the courts of Summer and Winter that could have literally earth shattering consequences. His own soul is up for grabs. Dresden must dig deep to discover that at time a willingness to accept a little help from your friends, be they a cub pack of werewolves, old loves in sheep's clothing, or a battalion of pizza loving dewdrop fairies, is a very good thing.

But as in a spell the words don’t work if they are not pronounced just right. Look up “sigil” and “ocher” to start. Demesne is a root of domain. French ,s as are so many of the words related to the high faery.
Still love the books and Marsters’ masterful characterization - changing from creature to human as smoothly as the Faery Knight.

Historia
In The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 3, Shelby Foote follows the events of the war from 1862 through 1864, discussing the strategies of both the North and the South and assessing the performance of the Union generals. The book opens with the beginning of the two final, major confrontations of the war: Grant against Lee in Virginia and Sherman pressing Johnston in North Georgia. In vivid narrative as seen from both sides, he tells of the climactic struggles, great and small, on and off the field of battle, that finally decided the fate of this nation.

Full of insight and understanding
Revisado: 02-13-18
As Foote concludes his masterwork, Lincoln said that man will never change - we will always have the silly and the wise... We will continue to have conflicts, some as tragic as the Civil War, and as many worthy children of our nation will die. This War was decided by the strength of money and of numbers. Lincoln also once commented that to the North the war was an abstraction while the armies of the South fought with the ferocious resolve of those fighting for their land. I have been deeply moved by this book and look forward to reading it again.

A Tough Read

Challenging but Rich
Revisado: 09-25-17
Many voices tell this story of the impact of a sociopath gaining control of the criminal face of Kingston Jamaica. The character around whom the story evolves speaks rarely and never forgets to wreak fatal vengeance on anyone who has offended, crossed, failed or attempted to cheat him. The story follows those who suffer the consequences of the Don's wrath and the desperate attempts of those who attempt to escape it.
Descriptions of violence and fear are not for the faint hearted.
This may be the most penetrating description in literature of ghetto life and the networks on which a drug culture depends.
