Historia
In the mountains of central Appalachia, blood runs as deep as these hollers and just as dark. Since before our kind knew these hills, hearts of unknowable hunger and madness have slumbered beneath them. These are the darkest mountains in the world. How dare we think we can break the skin of a god and dig out its heart without bringing forth blood and darkness? Old Gods of Appalachia is a horror-anthology podcast set in the shadows of an Alternate Appalachia, a place where digging too deep into the mines was just the first mistake. To learn more about Old Gods of Appalachia, visit our website at...

WILDLY Competent
Revisado: 01-06-24
To be honest I was not expecting this to be so excellent. I'd never heard of it before, and I just happened to see it while browsing.
I thoroughly regret not checking it out sooner. as a big fan of Hunt: Showdown I've always thought it was really cool the way that game blends dark mysticism / occultism and the Americana of the old west. old Gods of Appalachia scratches the same itch with phenomenal storytelling as well as excellent performances. I would give this series a six out of five if I could.

Historia
Tamsen Donner must be a witch. That is the only way to explain the series of misfortunes that have plagued the wagon train known as the Donner Party. Depleted rations, bitter quarrels, and the mysterious death of a little boy have driven the pioneers to the brink of madness. They cannot escape the feeling that someone—or something—is stalking them. Whether it was a curse from the beautiful Tamsen, the choice to follow an experimental route West, or just bad luck - the 90 men, women, and children of the Donner Party are at the brink of one of the deadliest adventures in history.

Certainly surprised me. Just... not in a good way.
Revisado: 07-19-23
I like horror and I like a good story about monsters in the woods. I picked up the book expecting skinwalkers and cannibalism.
I got thirsty 1800's folk, 9 different romantic subplots, and enough matrimonial discontent to make me roll my eyes. Also, there's a lot of incest and child predators. Sometimes both at once. Left me feeling profoundly uncomfortable and not in the way you want from a horror story.

I am very, very happy.
Revisado: 04-25-23
I've been a fan of the Horus Heresy for years, and for most of that time I've considered the Lion and the First to be my favorites. I was frankly a little concerned by the prospect of the Lion's return, but I'm pleased to say my concerns were unfounded. Mike Brooks writes with florid prose and demonstrates an incredibly thorough knowledge of the characters and lore that will assuage the doubts of even the most hardcore fan like myself, and Timothy Watson delivers a fantastic performance that I could listen to many times - and surely will.
I can only speak as a die-hard fan of the Lion and the Dark Angels, so I'll admit to some considerable bias, but I absolutely loved it.

The Warmaster’s horde advances through the fire and ash of Terra's dying breaths, forcing the loyalists back to the Delphic Battlement—the very walls of the Sanctum Imperialis. Angron, Primarch of the World Eaters and Herald of Horus, has achieved immortality through annihilation—now he leads the armies of the damned in a wrathful tide, destroying all before them as the warp begins its poisonous corruption of Terra's very soil.

Obviously not yet finished,
But so far the book is immensely dark and bleak, yet poetic in it's way. Aaron Dembski-Bowden is a great writer with some great turns of phrase, and Jonathan Keeble delivers an incredible performance as always.
If you can stomach the grinding attrition of hopelessness and a harrowing description of a war that was never going to have anything like a true 'winner', it's certainly worth a listen.
If you can't... Then I have to wonder why you got this far into the Horus Heresy series.
