Historia
In Metsan Valo, her family home on Lake Superior, Anni Halla’s beloved grandmother has died. Among her fond memories, what Anni remembers most vividly is her grandmother’s eerie yet enchanting storytelling. By firelight she spun tall tales of spirits in the nearby forest and waters who could heal - or harm - on a whim. But of course those were only stories.

A Modern Fairy Tale of Finnish Spirits

If the title above intrigues you, you might also enjoy this book. If you’re looking for action, horror, romance, etc., this isn’t that kind of book. Most of the book is about the reading of a will, for example. But I was absolutely entranced. ❤️

Historia
After five years of conflict, the planets Eiram and E’ronoh are on the cusp of real peace. But when news breaks of a disaster at the treaty signing on Jedha, violence reignites on the beleaguered worlds. Together, the royal heirs of both planets—Phan-tu Zenn and Xiri A’lbaran—working alongside the Jedi, have uncovered evidence that the conflict is being orchestrated by outside forces, and all signs point to the mysterious Path of the Open Hand, whom the Jedi also suspect of causing the disaster on Jedha.

The BEST of the High Republic
Revisado: 05-16-23
Frankly, while I’ve enjoyed all of the High Republic books, this is definitely my favorite. It really FEELS like Star Wars in a way that some of the other books didn’t.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

A Masterpiece!
Revisado: 03-22-23
This is the best book I’ve read this year, and it’s going to be difficult to top it going forward. Normally, I get audiobooks for listening while driving or exercising. But this one…I kept listening to it while cooking, eating, relaxing. I just couldn’t get enough. I listened to the last 5 hours while laying in bed sick. The lure of the tv never touched me.

The Only High Republic Story That Made Me Cry…
Revisado: 02-07-23
I’m a huge fan of the HR series. I think the Nihil however, aren’t a super compelling villain, so it was interesting reading a story where they weren’t involved (mostly). There’s one character that is really only in the story for a fraction of it, and their death in the climax, and the “eulogy” of sorts, had me wiping tears while riding the exercise bike at the gym (we read where we can).
A lot of people complained about it being a “show” rather than a regular “book”, but I had no trouble following the action. I thought it was great.

Historia
In Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu’s New York Times bestselling autobiography, the prime minister of Israel tells the story of his family, his path to leadership, and his unceasing commitment to defending his country and securing its future. Through a host of vivid anecdotes, he narrates his own evolution from soldier to statesman, while providing a unique perspective on leadership, the fraught geopolitics of the Middle East, and his successful efforts to liberate Israel’s economy, which helped turn it into a global powerhouse of technological innovation.

The Narrator Sounds Like a Robot
Revisado: 12-01-22
The first and last parts are narrated by Bibi himself, which is GREAT, but in between we get a guy who sounds like the text-to-speech voice of your computer. Ugh.
Luckily, Bibi’s life is a great story! My only complaints are that he jumps around in time too much, and sometimes he sounds like he’s “campaigning” rather than telling the story, i.e., phrasing like, “I then did what I always do in these situations, because I believe in integrity and honesty…yadda yadda yadda…” Don’t tell me, Bibi…SHOW ME.

Historia
In the grand storytelling style that is his signature, James Michener sweeps us back through time to the very beginnings of the Jewish faith, thousands of years ago. Through the predecessors of four modern men and women, we experience the entire colorful history of the Jews, including the life of the early Hebrews and their persecutions, the impact of Christianity, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition, all the way to the founding of present-day Israel and the Middle East conflict.

Worst Narration Ever
Revisado: 06-20-22
It’s a good thing that the book is so good, because I almost returned it solely because of the bad performance. He’s almost as bad as listening to a robot AI reading it to you. Yes, it’s THAT bad.

Historia
Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

EXTREMELY Offensive to LGBT Readers!
Revisado: 06-24-20
I could only get through part of Chapter 2 where the author continuously (and often for "laughs") refers to a brutally beaten to near death Transgender woman as "he", "him", etc. I have been a long-time fan of this author, but that ends today. I had no idea he was gonna have his characters act out some sick anti-Transgender BS for lurid "kicks". I am appalled.
