Better than Parem! Thanks, Leigh and Lauren!
Revisado: 02-24-25
With exciting plots eliciting tears and laughter, Leigh Bardugo is my favorite writer since JK Rowling. This final book in the Grisha series, Rule of Wolves, brings all the major characters together for several final showdowns in Ravka, Fjerda and Ketterdam. Rule of Wolves wraps up the series in a plot twist I never would have expected. Rumor has it Leigh is writing another book, the third in the Six of Crows “mini” series. I suspect Kaz Brekker will be leading another heist! Kudos to Lauren Fortgang’s wonderful narration. She gives each character a unique voice that continues through the series. Male and female characters are equally well done. My particular favorite is Zoya Nazyalensky!

Historia
Populist rage, ideological fracture, economic and technological shocks, geopolitical dangers, and an international system studded with catastrophic risk—the early decades of the 21st century may be one of the most revolutionary periods in modern history. But they are not the first. Humans have lived, and thrived, through more than one great realignment. What makes an age a revolutionary one? And how do they end?

Perspective Helped Understanding of Global Problems
Revisado: 06-03-24
I found Fareed’s overview of societal changes greatly reassuring, even though the problems seem insurmountable. I’m a liberal, but after reading the book feel much more compassion toward people whose life circumstances have led them to embrace right wing populism. This should be required reading for everyone!

Inspired Writing
Revisado: 05-19-24
I don’t know how I’m just now discovering Leigh Bardugo! She’s a fantastic writer - her terse style, use of humor, expert plotting and “root for-able” characters. Even her bad guys are rounded characters, not simply villains. Alina, the admirable heroine is brave, humble, clever and kind. I just finished Shadow and Bone and after finishing this review, I’m onto the 2nd in the trilogy. Leigh Bardugo is top of the list in the young adult fantasy genre.

Does History Repeat Itself?
Revisado: 02-11-24
I found the suspenseful plot line a brilliant allegory on society’s worst ills such as the craving of guns and other weapons and the horror of school shootings, which are allowed to continue due to greed and self-righteousness. I absolutely could not put the book down and loved the heroes of the story Citra and Rowen and the two honorable scythes who assisted them. I’ve already bought the sequel, the Thunderhead and can’t wait to listen!

Anisa Ellahi dreams of being a translator of “great works of literature,” but instead mostly spends her days subtitling Bollywood movies, living off her parents’ generous allowance, and discussing the “underside of life” with her best friend, Naima. Anisa’s mediocre white boyfriend, Adam, only adds to her growing sense of inadequacy with his savant-level aptitude for languages, successfully leveraging his expansive knowledge into an enviable career. But when Adam learns to speak Urdu with native fluency practically overnight, Anisa forces him to reveal his secret.

There’s No Free Lunch
Revisado: 11-05-23
Premise of book was fascinating- learn any language in 20 days. Author really kept up the suspense as reader waits to find out how the language integration works. I honestly could not put the book down. The ending was open ended and inconclusive, which disappointed me, but if there’s a sequel, I will surely read it. Like other reviewers have mentioned, the narrator was top notch!

Beautiful Tale Told by a Talented Narrator
Revisado: 08-12-23
I loved The House in the Cerulean Sea for many reasons. First, the characters. There were the magical children at the orphanage, such as Lucy, thought to be a demon but basically a vulnerable little boy, Talia, a gnome who’s a talented gardener and Chauncey, a magical octopus who wants to be a bellhop. (I adored Chauncey!) There’s also Sal, a sensitive poet who becomes a Pomeranian when frightened and a few other equally lovable characters. Linus Baker, a caseworker for a dystopian bureaucracy, comes to the island to determine whether the orphanage should be shut down. Linus finds that Arthur Parnassus, the man in charge, provides them a loving home and family atmosphere. In time Linus and Arthur grow close, but events unfold that threaten their future together. The narrator is brilliant giving each character a unique voice! This is a beautiful, heart warming story that shouldn’t be missed!

Author Navigates Life Challenges
Revisado: 06-09-23
In this memoir that reads more like a romantic novel, the author grows and changes through adversity. I enjoyed her descriptions of Paris, which I found quite vivid. Unlike a few other reviewers, I did not find her to be an obnoxious 40 something as she worked through several painful life events. Her beginning each chapter with a zodiac house gave the memoir an interesting and unifying thread.

Historia
In our last episode, we mentioned the Developmental Arc, a powerful technique Robert found somewhere years ago, but has used quite effectively in his astrology readings and work. It is where you list the planets in your birth chart from lowest degree to highest. This gives you a blueprint of how these energies will play out in your life. There is more to talk about on this incredible technique, so we are dedicating this episode to expanding Developmental Arcs in astrology. Great focus on different and unusual astrology topics
Revisado: 05-07-23
I’m so glad I discovered this podcast series hosted by Thomas Miller, who narrated Steven Forrest’s Elements series which I just finished and loved. This podcast also features Robert Glasscock, an astute and experienced astrologer with whom I was not familiar but who I will continue to follow along with Thomas Miller, whose enthusiasm for astrology makes each episode interesting and fun.

Historia
Millions of Americans have lost confidence in our political and economic system. After years of stagnant wages, volatile job markets, and an unwillingness by those in power to deal with profound threats such as climate change, there is a mounting sense that the system is fixed, serving only those select few with enough money to secure a controlling stake. With the characteristic clarity and passion that has made him a central civil voice, Robert B. Reich shows how wealth and power have interacted to install an elite oligarchy, eviscerate the middle class, and undermine democracy.

Best explanation of the real threat to democracy!
Revisado: 11-10-22
I just finished The System by Robert B Reich. It is hands down the clearest and most inspiring political book I have ever read or listened to. The author is a brilliant teacher, explaining how our current system is controlled by the oligarchy and how Americans can reclaim our God given rights and freedoms. I am currently living in Finland, where egalitarianism is fundamental. The rich are happy to pay taxes to enhance life for all. In fact 93 percent of tax payers think it’s important to support the government in providing free health care, education, child care and other necessities. Finnish people can live happy low-stress lives without worrying about the next injury, illness, job loss or other crisis destroying their lives.
Mr. Reich stresses the myth (maintained by those at the top) that Americans’ earnings are a reflection of their value to society. I enjoyed the fact that parts of the book are directly addressed CEO, Jamie Dimon, as a representative of big money. I’d love to know If Mr. Dimon was moved to use his substantial influence to even the playing field.
I strongly encourage everyone, regardless of political party to avail yourselves of the inspiring wisdom of The System.

In 2016, with the addition of four final elements - nihonium, moscovium, tennessine and oganesson - to make a total of 118 elements, the periodic table was finally complete, rendering any pre-existing books on the subject obsolete. Tim James, the secondary-school science teacher we all wish we'd had, provides an accessible and wonderfully entertaining 'biography of chemistry' that uses stories to explain the positions and patterns of elements in the periodic table.
