Historia
Stephanie Harrington had always expected to be a forest ranger on her homeworld of Meyerdahl until her parents relocated to the frontier planet of Sphinx in the far distant Star Kingdom of Manticore. It should have been the perfect new home - a virgin wilderness full of new species of every sort, just waiting to be discovered. But Sphinx is a far more dangerous place than ultra-civilized Meyerdahl, and Stephanie's explorations come to a sudden halt when her parents lay down the law: no trips into the bush without adult supervision!

Flat characters, dull, predictable story
Revisado: 12-18-13
It felt like the author found a 1,2,3 list of how to make money writing scifi for dumb girls.
"And girls love kitty cats, so maybe you can stick one in".
Painfully simplistic. Some other reviewers liked other books from this author, so I might try another, but this one was awful.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Narrator wins top prize!
Revisado: 12-15-13
Each character had such a unique and perfectly suited accent and cadence, it was such a pleasure to listen. Of course, excellent narration won't save a boring story! This is so full of complex historical details, I was swooning with joy. I come from Eastern European Jewish background, and have middle Eastern friends, and the insights and second thoughts and prayers seemed so very believable. Thank you so much, can hardly wait to hear your next book.

Historia
In 2007, the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN) outlined the hardware and software platform that would one day allow robots smaller than human cells to make medical diagnoses, conduct repairs, and even self-propagate. In the same year, a simple pill, it had been discovered, could wipe out the memory of any traumatic event. At almost the same moment in humanity's broad history, mankind had discovered the means for bringing about its utter downfall - and the ability to forget it ever happened.

BORING!
What a disaster. 100 years and 100 pages too long!
Hope no one reads this first, because I'm sure they will never read the great Wool.

Historia
When Earth is rocked by evidence that extraterrestrials may have seeded human DNA throughout the universe, a one-way expedition into deep space is mounted to uncover the truth. What linguist Meg Dupris and her crewmates aboard the Earth ship Damocles discover on Didet - a planet bathed in the near-eternal daylight of seven suns - is a humanoid race with a different language, a different look, and a surprisingly similar society. But here, it’s the "Earthers" who are the extraterrestrial invaders, and it’s up to Meg - a woman haunted by tragedy and obsessed with the power of communication - to find the key to establishing trust between the natives and the newcomers.

Loved learning the interpreters skills
Revisado: 08-31-13
Science Fiction writiers CAN create well developed characters, not just toy action figures!
Hip Hip Hooray!
Especially loved how we are isolated at the army base for most of the book, and then as delighted as Meg to finally get to see where Lewal lives.
The different voices were terrific, and allowing Meg to hear the thrumming and interpret it was brilliant.
BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO!

Memorable aliens and well developed characters
Revisado: 08-29-13
What made the experience of listening to Sliding Scales the most enjoyable?
Love Stefan Rudnicki, but was astonished at his ability to create voices for the Vssy so different from all the other aliens that have come before. It helped so much keep track of the different groups.BRAVO!
What other book might you compare Sliding Scales to and why?
I was shocked that so many of you didn't like this one. I was thrilled to see the complex societies, the amazing ideas Foster has regarding alien life, the thoroughly realized worlds he creates for us.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Loathing bureaucracy, I was thrilled to see it skewered so successfully! And it was also refreshing to see an author admit that consensus takes FOREVER.
