Liked the book loved the narrator
Revisado: 12-15-21
The narrator was excellent. He is one of the first ones I have heard who actually knows correct pronunciation, not only in English but in the rare bits of foreign languages in the book. Professional narrators who make pronunciation errors are a pet peeve of mine (obviously). Also, he manages the right tongue in cheek attitude for dealing with a subject as absurd as cursed objects without hamming things up. A nice fun listen.

Spade hits it out of the park...again
Revisado: 12-07-21
Being in the same age bracket as Mr. Spade, I got a lot of entertainment at his generation gap kvetching. Younger listeners might not quite see the humor in some of the digs, but you can't please everyone. Some great anecdotes tucked away in here. Great for a fairly quick entertaining listen.

Should leaders be feared or loved? Can dictators give rise to democracy? Should rulers have morals or wear them like a mask? Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince puts forth unsettling questions like these, whose answers redefined centuries of political wisdom. But what does it really mean to be Machiavellian? These 24 lectures are more than just a close reading of one of the great books of Western history.

Superb lecturer, excellent presentation
Revisado: 08-03-21
Dr. Landon is one of the most polished speakers I have heard amongst the Great Courses series. He has a wonderfully flowing misstep-free speaking style, and I like his forthright lecture approach to alternative views and his own conclusions. I went on to listen to more of his work after this one and I highly recommend him and his other works if you are at all interested in his field. Top satisfaction.

Shakespeare's plays - whether a comedy like A Midsummer Night's Dream, a history like Henry IV, or a tragedy like Hamlet - are treasure troves of insight into our very humanity. These 36 lectures introduce you to Shakespeare's major plays from each of these three genres and explain the achievement that makes him the leading playwright in Western civilization.

A stellar course!
Revisado: 09-15-20
I adored this course. The professor's entertaining, sometimes bordering on arch, tone is perfect for the material. He brings in not only his extensive knowledge of the material but a wide variety of opinions and traditions in Shakespearean studies. His utter disdain for people who believe Shakespeare didn't write his plays was particularly refreshing. I'm re-reading the plays now and getting a lot more out of some of them thanks to this course. It has my (very rare) highest recommendation. I have read other reviewers complain about his occasional pauses or slips, and though yes his delivery isn't perfect, it was always delightful.

Essential listening
Revisado: 09-02-20
Mr. Rather was present for so many of the crucial events in the second half of the 20th century, and he relates his anecdotes with style, grace, insight, and humility. My only complaint is that it is so short. I wish I could hear him relate stories for hour after hour.

Having altered the landscape of Italian art and society, as well as inspiring filmmakers the world over, Italian cinema proves a fascinating study. Major focuses of the course include neorealism, the Spaghetti Western, the Italian giallo, and Italian-style comedy.

An extreme disappointment
Revisado: 08-29-20
The book purports to be a history of Italian cinema, but really isn't. The author had some pet theories and movies that he really want to talk about, and disguised this under the title. He spent most of a lesson discussing basic vocabulary that anyone who picked up a book on national cinema would already know. He spent multiple lessons on a couple of films alone. Large developed genres of Italian films, each of which I was was expecting to get at least one lesson a piece devoted to them were dismissed all together in less than 10 minutes. I now know a lot about 2-3 directors and what random ideas excite the author, but very little about the history of Italian cinema. Also, I have a very good idea about what he covers in his other lectures and publications as he refers to them CONSTANTLY. A complete disappointment of a book. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, unless they are already aware of the author's interests and want to hear more.

Historia
Dr Jekyll, a charming doctor explores the possibility of dividing the dark and light side of her personality, but in doing this she creates a monster, Eleanor Hyde. For many years she manages to live under the radar, keeping her dark secret unknown to those around her. However, gradually her evil side gains strength until Dr Jekyll is overwhelmed by Eleanor Hyde, to disastrous consequences. An exploration of human duality and forces of good and evil, this modern retelling is compelling and eerie and retains the disturbing nature of the original text.

A missed opportunity for a retelling
Revisado: 06-29-20
Though slickly produced and well voiced, this modern gender-bending update of the classic delivers nothing new whatsoever aside from a few references to e-mail and texting. I was intrigued by the idea of a gender swap, but the dramatist did almost nothing with it. This was a step by step retread of the original that added nothing, despite all the possibilities. Utterly unnecessary.

Classic fantasy ruined by delivery
Revisado: 06-10-20
This book was out of print and availability, so I was excited to finally get a version of it again. It's a nice parody of overdone fantasy tropes, with plenty of easter eggs and nods for genre fans. Unfortunately, the narrator is trying hard to be overly dramatic, which made it almost painful to listen to.

Why would anyone join a cult? Maybe they're unhappy with their current religion, or they want to change the world, or they're disappointed with their lives and want to find something bigger or holier that makes sense of this confusing, chaotic and dangerous world. Or maybe they just want to give themselves the best possible chance of having sex with aliens. Whatever the reason, once people are in, it's usually very difficult for them to leave.

Excellent, doesn't need to be academic
Revisado: 09-29-19
Not every non-fiction book has to fit the standards of a university textbook, with objectivity and distance. I thought it was refreshing to have someone cover a subject and say what, as the author puts it, any decent moral person would think about the subject. I am usually skeptical of authors narrating their own work as they aren't trained and experienced voice actors, but Ms. Thornely did a cracking good job. Despite the grim subject matter, I laughed my pants off all the way throughout the book. There were a couple of odd omissions, for example nothing on the Manson Family, but I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in cults and would like to be entertained as well as informed.
