Historia
From one of the truly preeminent historians of our time, this is a landmark book chronicling the French Revolution. Simon Schama deftly refutes the contemporary notion that the French Revolution represented an uprising of the oppressed poor against a decadent aristocracy and corrupt court. He argues instead that the revolution was born of a rift among the elite over the speed of progress toward modernity and science, social and economic change.

Excellent Book
Revisado: 04-16-25
Simon Schama’s extensive work on the French Revolution is fascinating, exhaustively researched, well-written, and vastly enthralling. I wish he had been the narrator of the audiobook, though, since his personable and witty style would have made the book so much more enjoyable. Instead, the narrator manages to sound imperious throughout, and he makes all quotations sound like poor imitations of Winston Churchill.

Historia
For eight weeks in 1945, as Berlin fell to the Russian army, a young woman kept a daily record of life in her apartment building and among its residents. The anonymous author depicts her fellow Berliners in all their humanity, as well as their cravenness, corrupted first by hunger and then by the Russians. A Woman in Berlin tells of the complex World War II relationship between civilians and an occupying army and the shameful indignities to which women in a conquered city are always subject—the mass rape suffered by all, regardless of age or infirmity.

What Incredible Resilience!
Revisado: 04-04-25
The diary of a German woman living in Berlin at the end of World War II and the beginning of the Russian occupation, this is an account of survival and resilience in unimaginable circumstances, when hunger was rife, rape was common, clean water was a luxury, and none knew what would happen next.

Historian Annie Gray takes us down the street and through the ages, from medieval marketplaces to the purpose-built concrete precincts of the 20th century. Peeping through the windows of tailors, tearooms and grocers, we explore everything from the toyshops of yesteryear - where curiosities were sold for adults, not children - to the birth of brands we shop at today.

Fascinating
Revisado: 03-21-25
What a delightful book—interesting, well-researched, and lively. The author/narrator has provided a riveting account of the evolution of the high street through the past several centuries, including types of retailers and services, as well as specific retailers both extant and long gone. As a historian of the 18th and 19th centuries, I had not expected to find the changes of the 20th and 21st centuries as fascinating as Annie Gray makes them. Really excellent!

Historia
From Berlin to the Congo, from Moscow to the back streets of London, these are the stories of the agents on the front lines of British intelligence. And the truth is often more remarkable than fiction.
MI6 has been cloaked in secrecy and shrouded in myth since it was created a hundred years ago. Our understanding of what it is to be a spy has been largely defined by the fictional worlds of Ian Fleming and John le Carré. Gordon Corera provides a unique and unprecedented insight into this secret world and the reality that lies behind the fiction.

Everything about this book was absolutely fascinating, and the narrator was the perfect choice for the material. The highs and lows of British and American spycraft during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries is a riveting tale.

Historia
From the best-selling author of Wicked comes a magical new twist on Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, published to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll's beloved classic. When Alice toppled down the rabbit hole 150 years ago, she found a Wonderland as rife with inconsistent rules and abrasive egos as the world she left behind. But what of that world? How did 1860s Oxford react to Alice's disappearance?

Fabulous Narrator
Revisado: 11-05-24
While the story is entertaining enough, it is the talented narrator, Katherine Kellgren, who makes this worth the listen. I will certainly look for other books narrated by Ms Kellgren, who produces amazing accents and voices, sings, and provides the most delightful characterizations.

Historia
They were confidantes to British prime ministers, poets, writers, and artists, their lives entwined with the most celebrated and scandalous figures of the day, from Oscar Wilde to Henry James. They were the lovers of great men - or men of great prominence... They lived in a world of luxurious excess, a world of splendor at 44 Belgrave Square and later at the even more vast Clouds, the exquisite Wiltshire house on 4,000 acres, the "house of the age", designed in 1876 by the visionary architect Philip Webb - the model for Henry James' The Spoils of Poynton.

Excellent Book
Revisado: 09-14-24
Renton has written an excellent, well-researched book, which goes well beyond the biographies, narratives, and memoirs contemporary to the lives of her subjects in answering questions about the relationships of the Charteris, Tennant, and Wyndham families during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The only flaw in the audiobook is the exaggerated RP accent of the narrator, who must have been exhausted at the effort by the end of the project.

Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

Exasperating Narration
Revisado: 08-06-24
These stories are entertaining enough, but the narration is heavy-handed. It’s frequently overly dramatic and often enunciated too precisely, especially the dialogue.

Historia
As Assistant Private Secretary to four monarchs, 'Tommy' Lascelles had a ringside seat from which to observe the workings of the royal household and Downing Street during the first half of the 20th century. These fascinating diaries begin with Edward VIII's abdication and end with George VI's death and his daughter Elizabeth's Coronation. In between we see George VI at work and play, a portrait more intimate than any other previously published.

Revisado: 05-30-24
With an excellent narrator who brings the account to life, this book is the best I have seen or heard on the story of Anne Boleyn’s rise and fall and the contemporary foreign policy context of Henry VIII’s “Great Matter.” Altogether richly-researched and well-written, it should appeal to anyone with a professional or well-informed amateur interest in Tudor England.

Historia
Back in 1985, Frank Mackey was a nineteen-year-old kid with a dream of escaping his family's cramped flat on Faithful Place and running away to London with his girl, Rosie Daly. But on the night they were supposed to leave, Rosie didn't show. Frank took it for granted that she'd dumped him-probably because of his alcoholic father, nutcase mother, and generally dysfunctional family. He never went home again. Neither did Rosie. Then, twenty-two years later, Rosie's suitcase shows up.
