Narration irritating
Revisado: 03-05-25
The content was excellent, but I couldn’t listen for more than about 15 minutes at a time before I got so irritated by the narration that I couldn’t continue. The narrator seemed breathless in her excitement over the book. And her accent was one of the worst American versions I have ever heard.

Historia
Myth is our wild way of telling the truth, of sharing stories that have our living earth speaking through them. There is an old insistence that we each have a twin we know nothing about. A wild, curious twin that was thrown out the window the night we were born, taking much of our energy with them. This story is a quest to find and court our wild twin, for they have something important to tell us. If there was something we were here to do in our few, brief years, we can be sure that the wild twin is holding the key.

Historia
Outside the pale of the Abbey of Saint Peters and Saint Paul, in September of the year of our Lord 1140, a priestly emissary for King Stephen has been reported missing. But inside the pale, what troubles Brother Cadfael is a proud, secretive 19-year-old novice. Brother Cadfael has never seen two men more estranged than the Lord of Aspley and Meriet, the son he coldly delivers to the abbey to begin a religious vocation. Meriet, meek by day, is so racked by dreams at night that his howls earn him the nickname the Devil's Novice. Shunned and feared, Meriet is soon linked to the missing priest's dreadful fate. Only Brother Cadfael believes in Meriet's innocence, and only the good sleuth can uncover the truth before a boy's pure passion, not evil intent, leads a novice to the noose.

Bad narration
Revisado: 08-22-23
I had to stop listening because the narrator’s attempt to do a “male” voice was like fingernails on s blackboard. It is totally possible for a female to convey “male” without trying to reach into a lower range than she is capable of.

Mesmerizing
Revisado: 01-26-23
I wish it could have gone on forever. A modern gothic, along the lines of Jane Eyre. It’s one of those books I’ll keep coming back to. I didn’t think it could be better than Setterfield’s Once Upon a River, but it really is.

Dreadful narration

I couldn’t listen to more than 10 minutes. The weird accents and odd timing turned Pratchett’s prose, usually irresistible, into the dulcet tones of fingernails on a blackboard. A waste of a credit.

Historia
Biblical womanhood - the belief that God designed women to be submissive wives, virtuous mothers, and joyful homemakers - pervades North American Christianity. From choices about careers to roles in local churches to relationship dynamics, this belief shapes the everyday lives of evangelical women. Yet biblical womanhood isn't biblical, says Baylor University historian Beth Allison Barr. It was born in a series of clearly definable historical moments.

Informative but terrible narration
Revisado: 10-24-22
Sadly, I’m having difficulty getting through this. I find the book itself fascinating, but the narration is making me crazy. She seems to hum the end of each sentence and sounds stuck up—which is not the sense I get from the author. It’s fingernails on the blackboard.

Historia
In Men Explain Things to Me, Rebecca Solnit takes on the conversations between men who wrongly assume they know things and wrongly assume women don't. The ultimate problem, she shows in her comic, scathing essay, is female self-doubt and the silencing of women. Rebecca Solnit is the author of fourteen books about civil society, popular power, uprisings, art, environment, place, pleasure, politics, hope, and memory, most recently The Faraway Nearby, a book on empathy and storytelling.

Bouncy narrator
Revisado: 07-21-21
I couldn’t finish this. The narrator sounded like a bouncy, happy, brainless woman, even when describing the horrendous gang rapes of teenagers. I really wanted to hear this, because I haven’t gotten my hands on the physical book. But I just can’t.

Historia
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

Enthralling
Revisado: 02-01-19
One of the best audio books I’ve ever heard. The story is both gentle and cruel in spots, just as life can be gentle and cruel. Juliet Stevenson’s reading is so evocative of a quieter, more magical time. There were many places where I was sure the story had reached its conclusion, but then another twist in the story takes us further down the river. This is worth your time and attention.

Horrible narration
Revisado: 01-05-16
I actually have nothing to say about the story--the program insists that I rate it--because I couldn't listen past the narration. Nigel Planer's reading is quite uneven. In some books, it's okay. In this one, it's horrendous. Sorry. He exaggerated all the characters to the point I couldn't listen.

The day after a Gothic door is returned to its original place in the Mottisham village church, two men are found dead. A most under-appreciated author
Revisado: 07-08-15
Ellis Peters combines good writing and "feel good" stories with a touch of subversive sentiment against "the law." Whenever I'm feeling a little down and overwhelmed by all this world has to deal with, Ellis Peters doesn't put it right again, but she does provide a brief escape.
