Historia
The Red Army had much to avenge when it finally reached the frontiers of the Third Reich in January 1945. Frenzied by their terrible experiences with Wehrmacht and SS brutality, they wreaked havoc - tanks crushing refugee columns, mass rape, pillage, and unimaginable destruction. Hundreds of thousands of women and children froze to death or were massacred; more than seven million fled westward from the fury of the Red Army. It was the most terrifying example of fire and sword ever known.

I’ve read numerous histories of the European theater, but this one covers the Russian assault on Berlin in great detail.

Tedious
Revisado: 06-30-24
I have read and enjoyed many of their books. However, this one more closely resembles a soap opera. And there were times where I actually skipped the number of chapters and could pick up the storyline easily. The fact that after 15 hours, the issue was unresolved also was very unsatisfying.

Historia
In the fall of 1993, the quiet suburb of Harting Farms is shocked when children begin to vanish, and one is found dead near December Park - a great, sweeping expanse that is sunken below the streets and surrounded on three sides by vast woodlands, a place children believe is haunted. Newspapers call the abductor the Piper because he has come to lead children away, while kids whisper darker names for him in the school halls. Angelo Mazzone and his friends discover a link to the dead girl and take up the search for the killer.

Historia
It started as a routine Miami to Charlotte flight for the passengers, crew, and Federal Air Marshal Stephen Mason. But a freak storm over the Atlantic propels the airliner unexplainably back in time to the early 18th century. They find themselves on the sparsely populated coast of the Carolina Colony. Charles Town is the only English settlement of any size in the area. It's an inhospitable place of vast plantations, slavery, hostile natives, tall ships, and marauding pirates.

Disappointed
Revisado: 11-21-21
OK -- I didn't listen to the whole thing. Seemed like a not particularly interesting adaptation of Lord of the Flies so I gave up. If you think different let me know, but I don't think I can get through the pedestrian writing. Good narrator!

Historia
Rasputin separates fact from fiction to reveal the real life of one of history's most alluring figures. Drawing on a wealth of forgotten documents from archives in seven countries, Smith presents Rasputin in all his complexity - man of God, voice of peace, loyal subject, adulterer, drunkard. Rasputin is not just a definitive biography of an extraordinary and legendary man, but a fascinating portrait of the twilight of imperial Russia as it lurched toward catastrophe.

Disappointed
Revisado: 10-28-20
I love Russian History...and guess I may just be too plebeian to appreciate this. But while I listened, I felt I was being subjected to a PHD dissertation where the author was more concerned (rightfully) with acceptance by an academic board than a reading public.

Terrible Narration
Revisado: 07-18-17
The narration (by the author) is delivered in an incredibly dramatic fashion, the audio equivilent of the overblown acting in silent movies. I tried increasing the speed, but the story doesn't hold my interest -- the background to the events is overlong.
I made it about an hour before giving up. My wife heard and interview with the author on NPR and recommended it -- and it should have interested me. It did not.

Historia
Pulitzer Prize-nominated former Wall Street Journal reporter Ronald G. Shafer tells the colorful story of the election battle between sitting president Martin Van Buren, a professional Democratic politician from New York, and Whig Party upstart William Henry Harrison, a military hero who was nicknamed "Old Tippecanoe" after a battlefield where he fought and won in 1811. Shafer shows how the pivotal campaign of "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" marked a series of firsts that changed presidential politicking forever.

Tip and Ty!
Revisado: 06-23-17
With the discouragement of the 2016 political season, it's refreshing to realize that it was nothing new. The 1840 campaign of William Henry Harrison found substance seriously missing from the Whig Campaign, replaced by rallies, parades, songs and fireworks. The Democrats candidate was pictured as a candidate of the rich, and personally as effeminate. And it worked! With property qualifications largely eliminated by this time, it was the "unwashed masses" who selected the president. The campaign established the idea that style can triumph over substance.

An Attempt to Vindicate Bragg
Revisado: 05-05-17
As the title indicates, Bragg has been largely reviled by historians for a century and a half. Hess has taken the arduous ask of attempting to rehabilitate Bragg by spinning every possible excuse available. Historians who have denigrated Bragg are all plagiarists (according to Hess) who didn't do their own research. While Hess does present pro-Bragg sources, they do not match the number or status of his critics. But it is an interesting POV and worth reading/listening.
The narration by Yen is incredible!

Historia
The battles of Front Royal and Winchester are the stuff of Civil War legend. Stonewall Jackson swept away an isolated Union division under the command of Nathaniel Banks and made his presence in the northern Shenandoah Valley so frightful a prospect that it triggered an overreaction from President Lincoln, yielding huge benefits for the Confederacy.

Needs maps
Revisado: 04-23-17
This analysis of the beginning of Jackson's Valley Campaign provides a great overall analysis. However the very detailed examination of the battles of Front Ryal and Winchester cannot be followed very well unless you have a map in front of you as you listen. Since I listened while driving, I was lost much of the time.
