I should have read more about this book before purchase. Although the characters, writing and performance are well done, the story was too creepy for me.

Wheaton narrates this story perfectly! Scalzi has created a complex future with guilds, houses, government and religion all facing the biggest challenge ever. And their new leader was never meant to be in charge. Looking forward to the sequel.

It's astonishing that a book that uses so many cliches (coming of age, road trip, crazy artist, rebel southerners) could say so much. Our protagonist's awareness grows through a clever imaginary life as a Confederate General while her mother falls apart.

I chose this book that I've read in the past because I needed something to lift my mood and it did not disappoint.

There are very odd musical interludes, sometimes falling in the middle of a paragraph, but other than that this was thoroughly enjoyable. The Yorkshire accent is amusing and I can only assume it is accurate.

Best book and performance by far

The author's love of language is clear in the many phrases that painted a complex emotion or captured an expression or experience. The performance had me laughing out loud and crying. The voices of the characters are easily distinguished and often made me smile as I pictured them mouthing the words.

Choose another version instead of this one! The sing-song narration and attempts at voices are dreadful.

Is there intelligent life in the internet?

This series drew me in with its multifaceted view of the situation: the emergence of an intelligence from the WWW. Although a few things annoyed me (I've known a few brilliant teens and none of them use the insipid language of youth that is portrayed in this book), the unneeded repetition of themes and plot, I sped through all three books in record time.

I have no recollection of why I added this book to my wish list and I put off listening to it for ages and am sorry I did. I hadn't noticed who the narrator was and as I started to listen, I kept thinking, Cora? Cora from Downton Abbey? and then checked, and yes, it is THAT Elizabeth McGovern. The story pulled me in: beginning with the Orphan Train, the unlucky teenager who needs the chaperone, a chance for love, the revelations at home and the creation of a life that could work in a stifling time…well done!

Trapped as a woman of this time can be

This story is a slow burn of a woman trapped by the expectations of society - a society that devalues unmarried women, that considers men's intellect superior and allows people to be labeled and robbed of reaching their potential. The narrative is also a slow burn, plodding on with a building sense of helplessness and hopelessness. Expertly narrated by Kate Reading.

John Scalzi explores the boundaries of what it means to be different and to accommodate that difference in society through the story of a devastating illness that leaves many survivors paralyzed and some with amazing abilities. As always, Wil Wheaton provides an engaging performance.
