One of the best audio books I’ve ever listened to. Of course the story is a classic and so good, but the reading was phenomenal. I’m sure I’ll listen to it again closer to Halloween. :)

I could not stop reading/listening to this story, it is SO good! Villainy, double crossing, scandalous forbidden lust and twisting Victorian turns of fate, it’s like a fast-paced Dickens novel on cocaine, but from a woman’s perspective. The narration is also wonderful. Read it!

Solnit's writing is uplifting without being "motivational" or sappy, grounded in experience with real global politics and her own life. I was a little disappointed that this was less coherent as a book than "Hope in the Dark" (it's collected, previously published essays), but there is a thread of connection running between them all that makes it worthwhile to read together. The narrator's tone and voice, however, were completely off. Imagine the nauseatingly up-beat voice of a pharmaceutical advertisement reading you statistics on rape and violence...

Lewellyn's fiction is, as many have noted, a kind of nihilistic erotica where sex and the emptiness of death commingle in truly disturbing ways. Great stuff. Unfortunately, the narrator has a way of making all the dialogue sound either whiny or cartoonish, and the repetitive rhythm of the reading does no justice to the horror of the tales, instead making them seem perfunctory.
