This one stands out as one of my favorite in the series. The story was amongst the best and Matt Bates does a very good job with narration.

Historia
The year is 878, and the Saxons of Wessex, under King Alfred, have defeated the Danes to keep their kingdom free. Uhtred, the dispossessed son of a Northumbrian lord, helped Alfred win that victory, but now he is disgusted by Alfred's lack of generosity. Uhtred flees Wessex, going north to search for his stepsister in the formidable stronghold of Dunholm.

Good listen, just a bit disappointing to lose Keeble
Revisado: 01-26-23
This is a great book and Sellwood does a fine job reading. But unfortunately, he has to follow the master J. Keeble, and it’s nigh impossible to match such a perfect performance. Found myself drifting and having to rewind this one much more than the books narrated by Keeble.

Historia
The story is seen through the eyes of Uhtred, a dispossessed nobleman, who is captured as a child by the Danes and then raised by them so that, by the time the Northmen begin their assault on Wessex, Alfred's kingdom and the last territory in English hands, Uhtred almost thinks of himself as a Dane.

Jonathan Keeble is a master
Revisado: 01-08-23
I listened to another of Bernard Cornwell’s series last year — the Warlord Chronicles. It instantly became one of my favorite series, with a fantastic story and primary characters, and masterful narration by Jonathan Keeble. I was incredibly excited to see that Keeble also did the narration for this series. I was not disappointed.
To start with the book itself, Bernard Cornwell’s writing is exhilarating and unique. There are many sword-warlord novels out there, but few have the ability to truly display the depth of thought and relatable human emotion that Cornwell achieves in the Last Kingdom. On top of that, I don’t think any author nearly approaches the way that Cornwell writes combat. It is absolutely thrilling.
The reading by Jonathan Keeble is a match made in heaven. He brings clear life to each character, and his spirited narration of Cornwell’s martial scenes is perfect. Because Uhtred narrates the story, he is always in some character, and the emotion with which he reads makes you feel as if you are truly listening to the great warlord tell his tale. I would recommend to all my friends that they listen to this audiobook, even over reading the pages themselves.

Historia
The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Unexpected but good
Revisado: 05-20-19
The story of Achilles told through the eyes of his companion Patroclus. It was an unexpected but beautiful and genuine love story wrapped up in myth and legend. It tells a story we all know through a new and interesting lens. The writing is great, the performer is excellent, and I really enjoyed this book.
