Contemplating Suicide?

If you have ever struggled with a reason to carry on, or even if not, this book is for you. We all fall in either category. In fact I feel this should be required reading for millenials. I was moved on multiple occasions with this story of survival and healing process there after. The mental anguish and the sheer depravity in which these people endured is beyond me, and I've gained a new appreciation for all that survived and have lead lives that have benefited mankind like Victor E. Frankl.

From Meh to Woah!

I flat out did not like this book at first but figured, "Well I've made it to chapter 9..." This book was suggested to me by an author I really enjoy, Nicholas Sansbury Smith, as he touted it as his favorite and inspiration for writing. Trusting his better judgment, I continued listening and I'm glad I did.

I feel this author was inspired by Vonnegut and maybe Starship Troopers.

This book is truly timeless. So much expressed on the human condition in this story. Dumas is a theologian, a philosopher, and a scholar.

Hell Divers—Doesn't fall short

I simply could not stop listening (Audible) to this book. I ended up finishing the first three books (Book IV has just been announced) in 10 days! The story is action-packed and each chapter ended with great cliffhangers that encouraged you to keep read/listening. It really is the action that keeps the narrative going. Admittedly characters are archetypical to quickly convey to the reader what their role is —you can tell who is wearing the dreaded Star Trek Redshirt. As the books continue the author adds more depth to the characters but still doesn't DIVE too deep. And that's ok. I picked up the book on a whim because I wanted action and that's what I got. Think of it as like watching the Expendables. Nobody went to see the movie expecting Oscar-worthy performances. This is supposed to be a fun read, he is not seeking literary merit.

Grammarian with grace

Anne Curzan absolutely loves the English language, and we absolutely love her for it. She is the most knowledgable person (I wish I knew personally) on the subject. As an English teacher I can't wait to apply the lessons I have learned from her in my classroom. She is a grammarian with grace!
