Historia
In Dog Whistle Politics, Ian Haney Lopez offers a sweeping account of how politicians and plutocrats deploy veiled racial appeals to persuade white voters to support policies that favor the extremely rich yet threaten their own interests. Dog-whistle appeals generate middle-class enthusiasm for political candidates who promise to crack down on crime, curb undocumented immigration, and protect the heartland against Islamic infiltration, but ultimately vote to slash taxes for the rich.

Historia
The adoption of the landmark Voting Rights Act in 1965 enfranchised millions of Americans and is widely regarded as the crowning achievement of the civil rights movement. Yet fifty years later, we are still fighting heated battles over race, representation, and political power - over the right to vote, the central pillar of our democracy. A groundbreaking narrative history of voting rights since 1965, Give Us the Ballot tells the story of what happened after the act was passed.

Must read for all Adults

I became a voter when I was 26. Not because I was not registered but because I never realized how important it was. After this book I now know how important it truly is to vote in every election. 20 years have gone by since my first vote. I never realized how much I took for granted such a simple gesture. How many worked so hard for that right and how it is slowly being taken away for so many. I plan on sharing this book with all my friends. No longer about an identification but limiting who they want to vote.

Historia
"Leave now, or die!" From the heart of the Midwest to the Deep South, from the mountains of North Carolina to the Texas frontier, words like these have echoed through more than a century of American history. The call heralded not a tornado or a hurricane, but a very unnatural disaster: a manmade wave of racial cleansing that purged black populations from counties across the nation.

Learned So much
Revisado: 06-18-13
This book is a must read for those that want to know where we came from. Yes it is one mans opinion to how we think and learn but I feel we all fall into some of the pit-falls of the past. I plan on reading and listening to this book over and over. I have a daughter in early childhood education and plan on sharing this book with her.

Amazing account of History
Revisado: 06-18-13
This book was brought to my attention by another book I have. I had never in my schooling heard of the Dred Scott case and was thrilled to learn more about it. As I continue to learn about the years of slavery I will come back to this book over and over to learn how it played such a part of American Slavery and the courts.
