Historia
In 2021, Kacie decided to leave her life as a pro dancer in New York City and move to Italy–and she never looked back. Okay, that isn't strictly true… In You Deserve Good Gelato, Kacie reflects on everything from travel fails and homesickness to the joy of culture shocks and the power of doing the s*** that scares you. Because life is too short not to.

One of the best books I've listened to
Revisado: 06-09-24
I have been following Kacie basically since she started her social media, so I might be a bit biased in this review. But I loved it. I had a very similar experience living in Italy during covid, so it was healing to hear her story. She also gives a candid view on cultural differences between the US and Italy. Listening to this book made me want to return to Italy even more.

A Queer History of the United States

Historia
A Queer History of the United States abounds with startling examples of unknown or often ignored aspects of American history - the ineffectiveness of sodomy laws in the colonies, the impact of new technologies on LGBT life in the 19th century, and how rock music and popular culture were, in large part, responsible for the devastating backlash against gay rights in the late 1970s. Bronski documents how, over centuries, various incarnations of social purity movements have consistently attempted to regulate all sexuality, including fantasies, masturbation, and queer sex.

I enjoyed this book as it gives a much more in depth history of queerness than I have found anywhere else

Invigorating!
Revisado: 12-13-23
This book has inspired me to think about getting back into documentary photography and photojournalism. Corey's writing about his methods is also extremely helpful, even to expereienced photographers such as myself.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

insightful

as someone who loved iCarly as a kid, it was interesting to hear about her life off camera. but on a much more intimate level, i related to Jennette more than I thought. while i don't have bulimia, i relate to some of the things she went through with her mom. it's good to hear that somebody else knows a similar struggle. it felt like a healing journey just listening to her talk about these issues. i have so much respect for her.

Historia
We all know Dorothea Lange's iconic photos - the Migrant Mother holding her child, the shoeless children of the Dust Bowl - but now renowned American historian Linda Gordon brings them to three-dimensional life in this groundbreaking exploration of Lange's transformation into a documentarist. Using Lange's life to anchor a moving social history of 20th-century America, Gordon masterfully re-creates bohemian San Francisco, the Depression, and the Japanese-American internment camps.
