Historia
In this fascinating and entertaining look at games throughout history, Tim Clare explores the legal highs of a good dice roll, the thrills of a predatory race game, and the tactile pleasures of the games that age with us through our lives. Drawing on Roman anti-cheating devices, organised crime card games, and dice contests that link Chaucer to Warren G, The Game Changers will show you why games are more popular now than ever, and how playing them helps us win more often, become better losers and stay one step ahead - on and off the board. Through play, we become fully ourselves.

A fine history of the hobby, but the editorial components is lacking.
Revisado: 03-23-25
The history is good, if overlong. The personal side of the stories are far less interesting.

Historia
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

An amusing diversion

Scalzi at his simplest and silliest. That’s a good thing for a short piece like this one. Fun read over in no time.

Grant’s performance is solid but no revelation
Revisado: 12-08-24
I’m a fan of Grant, but I found his reading just solid. He doesn’t get into character or astound with his voice. He reads it.

Historia
In a sweeping synthesis of new research in a number of different disciplines, this book argues that we humans are not who we think we are. As he explores the interconnections between cutting-edge work in bioanthropology, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, human language and learning, and beyond, James Paul Gee advances, also, a personal philosophy of language, learning, and culture, informed by his decades of work across linguistics and the social sciences.

A thoughtful exploration of humanity
Revisado: 12-07-24
What Is a Human? is a fascinating exploration of humanity, weaving together insights from neuroscience, biology, linguistics, and philosophy. Using first principles, Gee offers sharp, thought-provoking reflections on human nature, challenging readers to rethink norms and explore the complexities of what it means to be human.
Gee's unique perspective, shaped by his background in linguistics and early priesthood training, enriches his analysis. The book is both an academic study and a deeply personal journey, drawing on a lifetime of learning and reflection.
A standout feature of Gee’s work is his rejection of simplistic definitions of humanity. He argues humans are not just physical beings but complex creatures balancing individuality and social interdependence. His metaphor of termite mounds highlights this duality, portraying humans as both distinct individuals and integral parts of a greater "swarm."
Gee also critiques mechanistic materialism, offering the idea of "spiritomes" to explore the spiritual dimensions of human life. While not for everyone, this concept adds an intriguing layer to his argument.
As a linguist, Gee delves into how language shapes thought and perception. His discovery of poetry later in life adds a personal touch, showcasing how language unlocks new ways of understanding. His admiration for poets like Emily Dickinson emphasizes the power of subjective, internal experiences in defining humanity.
I found the book to a useful read for anyone curious about the deeper questions of human existence. I certainly recommend it to anyone that ponders these notions; you will be rewarded.

One of the best audiobooks - such a great narrator. He captured the characters and emotion of the story effectively. I’ll be looking for additional books he records.

Fun Scalzi, but it loses steam
Revisado: 10-02-23
Love his ideas but sometimes they just don’t hit as hard as they should. This one almost does the job and it’s still a blast. But the makings of a great novel are here and it’s a bit of a bummer to see the potential not quite realized.

An embarrassing mess
Revisado: 11-02-22
While the elements of this book are useful, the author does a poor job of explaining the value of the models. He also doesn’t seem to be able to pronounce a lot of words properly, including nuclear and Bayesian. He mispronounces the name of historic figure Alaric I. This item should really be pulled and revised.
