No theatrics. Mindful. Heartfelt. I couldn’t get enough of this book. The way that Mr. Verrett spills his soul is very revealing. I was glad that he didn’t just focus on the torments of prison, but reflected on his thought processes throughout his sentence. No spoilers, so my review ends by encouraging readers to have an open mind when reading/listening. You’ll learn a lot throughout the reading and may realize that people deserve second chances.

This book was exactly what I wanted to learn about — self-determination. I loved the fact that Goggins spoke so much about failure getting in the way of his hopes and dreams. This isn’t a fact that many willingly disclose, which makes you feel like an outsider sometimes.

At times this book was tough to get through, especially when it came to the physical and mental abuse in his childhood. He lived a rough life! Yet, still through all of that, he put the responsibility in himself to get where he wanted to be.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who finds that fear inhibits them. Goggins was definitely in several uncomfortable situations. He put his feelings to the side because he could see the light shining behind the dark cloud.

Get started on this book! I’ll definitely be reading it again.
