Stomach-turning, but necessary reading

For those of us who regard Trump as the sorriest excuse for a human being ever to hold national office, Haberman’s meticulous reporting serves as confirmation, albeit with some new insights. For the others who remain in a Trump-induced trance, “Confidence Man” should be a vital truth serum. But sadly, few if any will be willing to take the medicine. Like anti-vaxers — and Trump himself — they are immune to truth.
Haberman’s work is Pulitzer-worthy. I wish she’d let someone else read it for Audible, though. Her metronomic delivery doesn’t do her writing justice.

Annie Dillard’s evocation of a quirky Cape Cod family (and its extended family) is a lyrical feast for the ears. A perfect way to make a long car trip go by in no time at all. Aside from all its many narrative virtues, The Maytrees celebrates the rich and endless potential of the English language.

A challenging story. Ultimately less gratifying than “A Gentleman…” but not without its rewards. Worth the effort.
