Historia
A decade after the cold war ended, policy makers and academics foresaw a new era of peace and prosperity, an era in which democracy and open trade would herald the "end of history." The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, sadly shattered these idyllic illusions, and John Mearsheimer's masterful new book explains why these harmonious visions remain utopian.

2021 writing that is just as accurate as 2025. 5/5 stars
Revisado: 04-03-25
Mearsheimer couldn’t have predicted the 9/11/2001 situation when he wrote this, and although in 2025 some of his realist predictions aren’t quite accurate while the US Empire still controls much of the world through NATO, but if you know human psychology then it follows that States act the same way. 2021 writing that is just as accurate as 2025. 5/5 stars, worth a (long) listen!

Historia
Max Weber's best-known and most controversial work, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, first published in 1904, remains to this day powerful and fascinating. Weber's highly accessible style is just one of many reasons for his continuing popularity. The book contends that the Protestant ethic made possible and encouraged the development of capitalism in the West.

why is there a full song of music after the audiobook? And why can’t the closing credits pronounce the authors name correctly?

Historia
Published anonymously on January 10, 1776, Thomas Paine's legendary work made the case for American independence. An immediate sensation across the thirteen colonies, Common Sense extolled Paine's belief that government should be simple and represent the will of the people, acting not as an oppressor but as a body to protect society. His clear and persuasive argument appealed to the common people, impressing on them the importance of secession from Great Britain.

One of the most significant books ever written by a head of state, the Meditations are a collection of philosophical thoughts by the Emperor Marcus Aurelius (121 - 180 ce). Covering issues such as duty, forgiveness, brotherhood, strength in adversity and the best way to approach life and death, the Meditations have inspired thinkers, poets and politicians since their first publication more than 500 years ago. Today, the book stands as one of the great guides and companions - a cornerstone of Western thought.

One of the best books of all time. It’s the opposite of the apologetics of Augustine’s Confessions. Aurelius was smarter than most of us in 2023.

Historia
Black Americans have long been shackled to the Democrats. Seeing no viable alternative, they have watched liberal politicians take the Black vote for granted without pledging anything in return. In Blackout, Owens argues that this automatic allegiance is both illogical and unearned. She contends that the Democrat Party has a long history of racism and exposes the ideals that hinder the Black community’s ability to rise above poverty, live independent and successful lives, and be an active part of the American dream.

Historia
Intellectuals and Race is a radical book in the original sense - one that goes to the root of the problem. The role of intellectuals in racial strife is explored in an international context that puts the American experience in a wholly new light. The book explores the incentives, the visions, and the rationales that drive intellectuals at the highest levels to conclusions that have often turned out to be counterproductive and even disastrous, not only for particular racial or ethnic groups but for societies as a whole.

Historia
Between 1348 and 1715, western Europe was fraught with turmoil, beset by the Black Plague, numerous and bitter religious wars, and frequent political revolutions and upheavals. Yet the Europe that emerged from this was vastly different from the Europe that entered it. By the start of the 18th century, Europe had been revitalized and reborn in a radical break with the past that would have untold ramifications for human civilization.

Andrew Fix is absolutely terrible at narrating
Revisado: 11-04-20
This "professor" Andrew Fix sounds like he's timidly reading an inaccurate Wikipedia page, instead of teaching something he's passionate and knowledgeable about. I don't often leave reviews, but this Great Courses audiobook has 4.4 stars with 617 reviews. Read the reviews about him stuttering, saying "ummmm" all the time, giving incorrect facts, and pronouncing tons of stuff poorly. I made it 3 hours out of 24 hours, but I can't do it anymore. Petrarch is apparently "PEE-trarch" among other silly errors. Did he actually attend any university classes?? Returning. Love Great Courses, and this is the first book I've returned and hated.

At a time when men and women were prepared to kill - and be killed - for their faith, the Protestant Reformation tore the Western world apart. Acclaimed as the definitive account of these epochal events, Diarmaid MacCulloch's award-winning history brilliantly recreates the religious battles of priests, monarchs, scholars, and politicians - from the zealous Martin Luther and his 95 Theses to the polemical John Calvin to the radical Igantius Loyola, from the tortured Thomas Cranmer to the ambitious Philip II.
