In the darkest part of the solar system lies a wormhole. Nether. Astrophysicist Cammie Skoura has joined the first research team traveling to the Nether anomaly, eager to understand the mechanics of the wormhole and to explore its possibilities as a shortcut to Alpha Centauri. This is a silly book
Revisado: 04-30-25
Interesting premise but characters are all way over the top, narrator sounds like he's suffering from a terrible anxiety attack throughout the book.

Historia
Bruce Lee, having had access to more than one million pages of US Army documents and thousands of pages of daily top-secret messages dispatched to Tokyo from the Japanese embassy in Berlin, assembles fascinating revelations about pivotal moments in the war, including the reason Eisenhower stopped his army at the Elbe and let the Russians capture Berlin, the invasion of Europe, and the battles on the African and Eastern fronts.

Author's rhetoric needs to be toned down
Revisado: 04-29-22
This is a very interesting and important subject. However, the author writes as though every historian who has previously written on this topic is a fool. He speaks very disrespectfully of other historians as well as many historical figures who were actually involved in the decrypting work (just as one example, he describes one decoder's skills as "being adequate only for reading smoke signals). In addition, he never tires of telling us how many, many documents he has read. It makes it very difficult to take the book seriously as it often sounds more like a pompous screed. The subject is interesting, the performance is good, but the author needs to tone down his rhetoric

Historia
February 26, 1924 was the first day of the greatly anticipated high treason trial that would galvanize Germany - but few in the courtroom that morning anticipated that the leading defendant, General Erich Ludendorff, whose risky offensives during World War I doomed Germany to defeat, would soon be eclipsed by the private first class at his side, Adolf Hitler. Hitler was charged with treason after unsuccessfully trying to seize power in the notorious Beer Hall Putsch in Munich in 1923.

Story largely untold
Revisado: 08-25-19
Most histories of this period usually deal with the Beer Hall Putsch in a paragraph or two. This book covers the period immediately before and after the Putsch. Most importantly, it covers Hitler's trial in great detail. An important contribution to the literature of Hitler's formation and rise and to the mindset of many German civilians and military men in the 1920's.

Historia
For decades, a major piece of World War II history has gone virtually unwritten. The war began in China two full years before Hitler invaded Poland, and China eventually became the fourth great ally, partner to the United States, the Soviet Union, and Great Britain. Yet its drama of invasion, resistance, slaughter, and political intrigue remains little known in the West.

Simon Vance is the best
Revisado: 12-28-14
Any additional comments?
Simon Vance is my favorite narrator, fiction or nonfiction. Terrific job with the pronunciation of innumerable Chinese names and places. A wonderful book on an all-too-often forgotten part of the Second World War.

Historia
Written by award-winning science writer John Emsley, this informative and highly enjoyable book explains the what, the why and the wherefore of the elements. Arranged alphabetically, from Actinium to Zirconium, it is a complete guide to all the elements that are currently known, with more extensive coverage of those we encounter in our everyday life. The entry on each element reveals where it came from, what role it may have in the human body, the foods that contain it, how it was discovered, its role in human health, the uses and misuses to which it is put, and its environmental role.

especially for chemistry geeks, but the narrator should have been given help with pronouncing some common terms.

Why evolution is more than just a theory: it is a fact. In all the current highly publicized debates about creationism and its descendant "intelligent design", there is an element of the controversy that is rarely mentioned: the evidence, the empirical truth of evolution by natural selection.

Beautiful and moving
Revisado: 12-29-12
Any additional comments?
A beautiful and moving description of the wonders of evolution--probably the best description for the general reader that I have come across. It is clearly and cogently written and argued and, of course, is a great resource for anyone wanting to respond intelligently to proponents of I.D. It is much more than this, however. Anyone who wants to experience the beauty and wonder of evolution (more awe-inspiring than any "creation") will want to read this book. The lack of illustrations mentioned in the text somewhat detracts from the experience (a downloadable pdf file would solve this) but this book is good enough to have in hard copy as well audible.
