Tedious
Revisado: 10-24-18
I've enjoyed Karin Slaughter's work in the past and I love Kathleen Early's narration. This one was so tedious though. My mind wandered and I got lost in the winding, time-jumping narrative to the point that I had to rewind several times just to keep up with the story.
But one nitpicky detail really bothered me. When she was talking about Andy's trip to Austin, the following passage annoyed me greatly, "Andy backed out of the space and followed the signs toward UT-Austin. The sprawling campus took up forty acres of prime real estate. There was a medical school, and hospital, a law school, all kinds of liberal arts programs and, despite not having its own football team, countless Texas Longhorn flags and bumper stickers." As a native Austinite and a UT grad, this just grated on my nerves. I'm not exactly a football fan, but for crying out loud, of course UT-Austin has a football team! And the thing that made it more annoying was the fact that she got so many other details about Austin correct. The description of the Travis Heights neighborhood and of Paula's house seemed spot on. The fact that UT-Austin has a medical school and a hospital is new, so Slaughter clearly did some research about the city and the University. I know it's petty and would likely only bother an Austinite or UT grad, but it really took me out of a story that I was already only lukewarm about.

Starts out good, but becomes predictable
Revisado: 03-15-18
This story was pretty much par for the course for this genre. Nothing too original or earth-shattering, but overall an enjoyable ride. The narrator, on the other hand, drove me NUTS! Her lilting, sing-song recitation of the terror and danger Liana faced really took me out of it. Her performance was better suited to a fluffy beach read (Don't get me wrong, I love a good beach read, but that's not what this is!). Her accent (Canadian?) was all wrong for Liana who is supposed to be from Pennsylvania. It just drove me nuts.

Excellent Book and Performance
Revisado: 08-10-15
Any additional comments?
This was such a refreshing surprise. I'm often skeptical of books that are recommended based on my previous interests or purchases. However, "The Luckiest Girl Alive" did not disappoint. The story was compelling and interesting with some unexpected surprises along the way that weren't cheap or cheesy, but rather propelled the story further in interesting and entirely plausible ways.
Ani is a flawed person with some interesting quirks. As the story unfolds, you see the origin of how she became the woman she is, and it makes her more human and garners empathy for her.
Further more, the performance was great. Sometimes a performance can get in the way of the story, but that is not the case here. Madeline Maby brought the story to life and didn't overpower it.
I definitely recommend this audiobook!

Fantastic performance and an eerily compelling story
Revisado: 08-04-15
Santino Fontana really brings this book to life and takes you into Joe's head. The story is creepy and disturbing and yet I found myself alternately shocked by and sympathetic to Joe.
This is a truly original story and unique voice. If you enjoy psychological thrillers and suspense, this is a fresh take on those genres.

Historia
Greg Mortenson has built a global reputation as a selfless humanitarian and children's crusader, and he's been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. He is also not what he appears to be. As acclaimed author Jon Krakauer discovered, Mortenson has not only fabricated substantial parts of his bestselling books, but has also misused millions of dollars donated by unsuspecting admirers like Krakauer himself. This is the tragic tale of good intentions gone very wrong.

Unlistenable

Any additional comments?
The 8 minute recitation of names at the beginning should have tipped me off. I have no idea who those named were, nor why I had to listen to them. And then when the meat of the book started, I was so bored it didn't hold my attention. I just stopped listening and I'm returning it. Maybe this should have been a multi part feature article in a magazine, but definitely not an audiobook!

Initially engaging and then just annoying
Revisado: 07-13-15
What would have made Firefly Lane better?
At first the specific references to music, fashion, TV, movies, and all matter of pop culture drew me in. I thought, "I remember that stuff. Cool!" After awhile, though, it gets to be so gimmicky and annoying that I could barely stand it.
Would you ever listen to anything by Kristin Hannah again?
I might.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The performance was good. Not the most standout performance I've ever heard, but Brilliance Audio is reliably good.
Any additional comments?
I wanted so much to like this more, but as I said, the pop culture name dropping was so clunky, that it was distracting. As the story continues, each reference lands with a thud.

Historia
When Elspeth Noblin dies of cancer, she leaves her London apartment to her twin nieces, Julia and Valentina. These two American girls never met their English aunt; they only knew that their mother, too, was a twin, and Elspeth her sister. Julia and Valentina are semi-normal American teenagers - with seemingly little interest in college, finding jobs, or anything outside their cozy home in the suburbs of Chicago, and with an abnormally intense attachment to one another.

Wonderful narrator really brought the story to life
Revisado: 05-31-15
I loved The Time Traveller's Wife, so I was eager to find more from this author.
The story started a little slowly, but I'm
glad I stuck with it. And even though I saw the big surprise coming for days, it was well told and I enjoyed the reveal.
