Historia
Darkover, planet of wonder, world of mystery, has been a favorite of science fiction fans for many years. For it is a truly alien sphere - a world of strange intelligences, of brooding skies beneath a ruddy sun, and of powers unknown to Earth. In this novel, Marion Zimmer Bradley tells of the original coming of the Earthmen, of the days when Darkover knew not humanity. This is the full-bodied novel of what happened when a colonial starship crash-landed on that uncharted planet to encounter for the first time in human existence the impact of the Ghost Wind, the psychic currents that were native only to that world, and the price that every Earthling must pay before Darkover could claim him for itself.

amAn interesting story
Revisado: 04-19-25
I liked the idea behind the story and the story line. i do hope the author does a continuation as it really feels incomplete and it is pretty good. The weaker points in this story are the pictures drawn through text are less than vivid. And it bounces around between characters without truly developing them as people. I didn't find myself caring a whole lot about the fate of individual characters.
But again the plot is good and I would like to see what happens to the settlement as a whole. And hopefully get a little more indepth knowledge about the prime characters.

They came after the Diseray. Some were terrors ripped from our collective imaginations, remnants of every mythology across the world. And some were like nothing anyone had ever dreamed up, even in their worst nightmares. Now, the luckiest Cits live in enclosed communities, behind walls that keep them safe from the hideous monsters fighting to break through.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Amazing story
Revisado: 08-13-24
They say write what you know. Well i just pucked this one off the "shelf" with out really looking. A few chapters in I'm thinking this has to have been written by a former school teacher. I could hear my cousin, a former high school teacher... yup the cool one, in every scene. So i had to go.look at the author. Andy Wier? Yeah that's why this book was on the *shelf*, but Andy was never a teacher to my knowledge. I've no idea how he created this character so well but it's amazing. Typical to Andy the science terrific and the story line hits every emotion. i cannot recommend this book highly enough.

I cannot swear as to the accuracy of story in depicting what it's like to be Trans. from friends who are it does seem to have relavance and authenticity. Everyones experience is different but if you are not gay or trans and want a peak into what it can be like, I urge you to read this and get to know your fellow humans.

great story, not the right reader
Revisado: 05-04-22
I loved this just as I have every other book in the series. The reader was pleasant to listen to, but there wasn't enough variation to her voice. I found it difficult to follow who said what unless it was explicitly stated. and telling the men from the women was often difficult.
Still, it was was quite enjoyable and I do recommend this if it's not available by another reader.

The chief scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) turns a critical eye toward such practices as telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and psychokinesis. Are such powers really possible? Science says yes. According to noted scientist and best-selling author of The Conscious Universe, Dean Radin, magic is a natural aspect of reality, and each of us can tap into this power with diligent practice.

Some of the most convincing evidence Ive heard yet
Revisado: 04-23-19
The reading given by Mark Bramhall is excellent, I really felt the author speaking through him. The evidence supplied, while not without challenges, makes some pretty hard to ignore cases for the existence of magic. If you're already a believer you will love the evidence given here to help back up your beliefs. If you're a skeptic prepare to be challenged. You may not be convinced but if you're honest with yourself you'll have to recognize there's a possibility.

A great read could not save this book
Revisado: 06-13-14
What would have made The Hospital: The FREE Short Story: The First Mountain Man Story better?
The writting feels inexperienced, I've no idea what or how many stories K.C. Blackmore has written, but the work seemed unpolished and overly preoccupied with trying to "feel real" ... and overly occupied with toilet paper. I found the main, really the only, character in the story unbelievable. He seems not the brightest of people and how he alone managed to survive makes no sense to me. The best of science fiction brings to bear man's superior intellect to defeat those bad things that might happen, this character just seems to stumble along making his way using bad movies as his guide. I found him uninspiring and I just, as he would put it, didn't give a f**k about him and whether or not he survived. It's possible seeing more of the book, especially if there are earlier chapters, might improve my attitude toward him, but I don't see myself desiring to pay to find out.
What does R. C. Bray bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Mr Bray brought some color to words lacking in color. He brought some urgency where I believe had I just read the story I would have felt none.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
The main thing this sparked for me was a desire to care about the main character. I just couldn't.

Variations on the Romeo Juliet theme.
Revisado: 04-10-14
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The somewhat predictability of the story line was my least favorite part. Since this is only a teaser I can't say if it will get better as it goes along.
What about Bernadette Dunne’s performance did you like?
Bernadette did a reasonably good job of making the voices seem real and in character.
Any additional comments?
A bit slow in building but I liked the overall writing style. I don't think I'll get the full version of this book but I'll be looking at some of their other works to see if I like other of their story lines better.

Any additional comments?
As I understand it, despite it's release date, this is the first of Heinlein's novels. Very obviously so. Heinlein had a great deal of learning to do when he wrote this though what was to be his style is still very evident.
I don't think I agree with the many comments that say there is no plot. It is there, a bit thin that's true, but it is there.
The one thing I enjoyed was getting a chance to look at a young Heinlein and see where he came from. The book is loaded with miss-conceptions and fanciful idea's that just would never work. I enjoyed the book just the same, it's just a long way from the best of his work.
In short if you're looking for another great book by Heinlein, this isn't it. If you're looking to get to know a little more about who Heinlein was, it's worth a listen.
