Historia
Every time Bill Bryson walks out the door, memorable travel literature threatens to break out. His previous excursion on the Appalachian Trail resulted in the best seller A Walk in the Woods. Now, we follow him "Down Under" to Australia with this delectably funny, fact-filled, and adventurous performance that combines humor, wonder, and unflagging curiosity. More from Bill Bryson.

totally delightful
Revisado: 11-07-09
This is a delightful book, well read, humorous as well as informative, vivid descriptions of people and places. I feel as if I've been there. Kept my attention throughout. I was sorry when he had to return from Australia. I wish he'd go to New Zealand and Fiji next.

Hill IS addictive
Revisado: 08-09-08
One of the reviewers who posts here has said repeatedly that listening to HIll's books is addictive and I have come to agree with him. I love listening to these books which continue to have delightful characters. They are also well plotted, humorous, suspenseful and intelligent. The reader of the last three Hill books is one of the VERY best. I wish he would redo some of the books about which other readers have complained. Evelyn

Historia
Like father like son....But heredity seems to have gone a gene too far when Pal Maciver's suicide in a locked room exactly mirrors that of his father 10 years earlier. In each case, accusing fingers point towards Pal's stepmother, the beautiful, enigmatic Kay Kafka. But she turns out to have a formidable champion: Mid-Yorkshire's own super-heavyweight, Detective Superintendent Andrew Dalziel.

This well known writer is new to me, but I am totally delighted with the first of his books that I read. If you like literary illusions, wry humor, and a deft psychological novel, you will love this book. I'm now reading Death's Jest Book and so far, it's just as good as Good Morning, Midnight.

Historia
The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame...and of a struggle between good and evil that will turn church against state, and brother against brother.

a really good read
Revisado: 07-21-08
I am not usually a fan of historical fiction, butI thoroughly enjoyed this gripping novel, which seemed to be historically quite accurate. It kept my interest for almost its entire length, but I must admit that it got repetitive in the last quarter. Nonetheless, I'm going to read the sequel, after I've taken a short break. The vision of that beautiful cathedral that was built against the odds, stays with me.
