Historia
Al Ward lives on an isolated mining claim in the high desert of central Nevada fifty miles from the nearest town. A grizzled man in his sixties, he survives on canned soup, instant coffee, and memories of his ex-wife, friends and family he’s lost, and his life as a touring musician. Hampered by insomnia, bouts of anxiety, and a chronic lethargy that keeps him from moving back to town, Al finds himself teetering on the edge of madness and running out of reasons to go on—until a horse arrives on his doorstep: nameless, blind, and utterly helpless.

Tugs at the heartstrings
Revisado: 03-04-25
I myself and a lot of people I’ve known can all find parallels along this story. It’s maybe not for all, and the heartbreak in this story is long and deep.
But the protagonist is a good man, just unlucky in life. And the horse himself is also a parallel of the main character, sort of a spirit animal.
I won’t ruin the end, but the journey is wonderfully told. Don’t know a lot of forlorn country singers myself, but I do know a lot of people who’ve tried their whole lives to get it right and never really get there. Empathy for woebegone types is a must for this story and the treasure can be found.
Also, it’s just one of the best books I’ve ever read.

Historia
Lisa Jakub had what she was supposed to want: She was a working actor in Los Angeles. She had more than 40 movies and TV shows to her name. She had been in blockbusters like Mrs. Doubtfire and Independence Day. She walked the red carpet and lived in the house she had bought when she was 15. But something was missing. Passion. Purpose. Happiness. In this funny and insightful book, Lisa chronicles the adventures of growing up in the film industry and her difficult decision to leave behind the only life she had ever known.

She just sounds so much like the rest of us
Revisado: 07-08-24
Yes her thoughts can be different but Lisa does a great job of putting her neuroses on an audible format (pun intended) and letting at least some of us know we’re not alone in the unending wild thoughts that race through our minds at times.
That’s not all it’s about, the Hollywood and acting stuff is great. The travels and slog it can be is brought to life exfremely well.
Well written and recited, plus she’s just funny.

Historia
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

Read once, listened twice
Revisado: 06-14-24
Just an incredible story of perseverance. I will listen to it again. For those that saw the movie only, personally I couldn’t get through it. Not poorly made, just didn’t hit the same way.
One of the best books I’ve ever read, and I’m usually not a memoir person. This one is just too heartbreaking and then redemptive.
I had a rough childhood and then there’s reminders that others also suffered greatly, even with loving parentage.
And the author does a fine narration.
Absolutely wonderful.
