Since then Sy has practiced true immersion journalism, from New England aquarium tanks to the reefs of French Polynesia and the Gulf of Mexico, pursuing these wild, solitary shape-shifters.

I wish I would have read the other reviews first
Revisado: 07-15-19
Piling on to what others have said. Octopus anecdotes and the author's memoirs of getting to know different octopuses was all pretty interesting. I am not afraid to quit mid-book if I don't like it, and I stayed with this one to the end. So there's that. But, as far as "a surprising exploration into the wonder of consciousness," not so much.

There is no music audio in this audiobook
Revisado: 02-20-19
A couple other reviewers have mentioned variations of this also. The book is well narrated, but misleading. Other people may have different listening habits, but I am listening to an audiobook specifically because I'm not in a position to read along or follow along with other printed material. If I could be reading along (or playing along on a keyboard) then I would just use a printed book.
That said, it would have been VERY helpful (especially because the author repeats that these elements need to be heard to be understood) If he would give audio examples of the elements he's explaining. Give us 5 seconds of a metronome at an Allegro tempo. Play a C chord. Major v. minor.Something we can compare to the next time we actually are at a keyboard. The lack of that was so frustrating that I just stopped listening at the chapter on chord progressions. What was the point of making this book in audio form?

Make no mistake, it's long. And if you are not fascinated with the isotopes of magnesium, there are long stretches of non-fascination. But overall, totally worth it. I mean, what's 20 some hours in the face of 4.567 billion years.

Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Already internationally acclaimed for his elegant, lucid writing on the most challenging notions in modern physics, Sean Carroll is emerging as one of the greatest humanist thinkers of his generation as he brings his extraordinary intellect to bear not only on the Higgs boson and extra dimensions but now also on our deepest personal questions. Where are we? Who are we? Are our emotions, our beliefs, and our hopes and dreams ultimately meaningless out there in the void?

Revisado: 01-16-17
It's a big project (no titular pun intended) to combine theology, philosophy, physics, history, and probability and have it work toward a meaningful end. But this book does it. Well done.
The highest compliment I can pay it is that I will definitely be going back through large portions of it a second time, once I've finished digesting the initial listen.

Historia
More than 50 years ago, John Coltrane drew the 12 musical notes in a circle and connected them with straight lines, forming a five-pointed star. Inspired by Einstein, Coltrane had put physics and geometry at the core of his music. Physicist and jazz musician Stephon Alexander returns the favor, using jazz to answer physics' most vexing questions about the past and future of the universe.

I tried and failed not to be disappointed
Revisado: 01-16-17
Just a couple of points. I love jazz & I love at least trying to understand physics. So my expectations of this book might have been tweaked a bit too high.
My main objection is that there are no musical clips in this book anywhere. You can't just describe what John Coltrane was doing and hope for it to have an impact. We have to have an illustration of it, precisely because it seems to stray from the easily understandable. I tried listening to the Coltrane albums he mentions after I finished the book, and I could no more easily decipher them or relate them to the physics concepts in the book than I could before listening to it.
Just a personal opinion- I am no fan of the "whistling S" sound in a narrator. Some people don't mind it, I do. Take it into account before listening if it's going to bother you.
