Historia
In 1940, 18-year-old Juliet Armstrong is reluctantly recruited into the world of espionage. Sent to an obscure department of MI5 tasked with monitoring the comings and goings of British Fascist sympathizers, she discovers the work to be by turns both tedious and terrifying. But after the war has ended, she presumes the events of those years have been relegated to the past forever. Ten years later, now a radio producer at the BBC, Juliet is unexpectedly confronted by figures from her past. A different war is being fought now, but Juliet finds herself once more under threat.

It’s not presented as a quick fix.
Revisado: 01-03-24
I liked the practical application and the realness with which he presented this topic. Also the willingness to share that he loses touch with his awe from time to time. It’s always in evolution and the importance of trust in yourself to find it again.

Historia
Florence, the 1550s. Lucrezia, third daughter of the grand duke, is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo: free to wonder at its treasures, observe its clandestine workings, and to devote herself to her own artistic pursuits. But when her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding, Lucrezia is thrust into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage, and her father just as quick to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood behind, Lucrezia must make her way in a court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed.

The historical details are fantastic
Revisado: 12-23-23
As usual, Maggie O’Farrells story construction is a part of the spellbinding fascination that draws me in. She leaves me wanting the story to go on and on
PS i know it’s a great story when the characters speak to me in my daily life ❤️

Historia
Alice Raikes takes a train from London to Scotland to visit her family, but when she gets there she witnesses something so shocking that she insists on returning to London immediately. A few hours later, Alice is lying in a coma after an accident that may or may not have been a suicide attempt. Alice’s family gathers at her bedside and as they wait, argue, and remember, long-buried tensions emerge. The more they talk, the more they seem to conceal. Alice, meanwhile, slides between varying levels of consciousness, recalling her past and a love affair that recently ended.

MOF does not disappoint- downright normal lives containing everything from tedium to tragedy, portrayed in delicious details. She plays on a sense of time that is simultaneously slowed way down and speeded up. Delightful.

Historia
Lexie Sinclair yearns for more than her parents’ genteel country life. She makes her way to the city, where she meets a magazine editor, Innes, a man unlike any she has ever imagined. He introduces her to the thrilling world of Bohemian postwar London, and Lexie learns to become a reporter, to know art and artists, to live fully, unconventionally, and with deep love. And when she finds herself pregnant by a man wholly unsuitable for marriage or fatherhood, she doesn’t hesitate a minute to have the baby on her own.

The style and story development - my heart ached as I read.
Revisado: 11-25-23
Absolutely could not stop listening to- this is the first book in forever that has hooked me and wouldn’t let me go. The mysterious weaving of lives and details, ordinary observations, and what is does to my desire when she gives away a detail like “what she couldn’t know was that she would die young”. I mean who tells you that prematurely? But it works. I am in love with MOF!

I wasn’t afraid because I felt like I belonged here (about traveling in the Middle East- paraphrased)
Revisado: 06-03-23
I thoroughly enjoyed the book - the level of detail just right; but this phrase stopped me in my tracks. It made me wonder how so very many lives could feel safer, free from the bone deep belief of the opposite- I don’t belong here and all it’s variations of unworthiness- if we could refrain the nervous system to understand we are safe. We do belong in this world, no matter where we go. I may not be explaining my thoughts well but I think others who need this nugget will understand. Thank you Luke for the whole book- your honesty and vulnerability came through - and thank you for this particular passage of your Middle East travels.
