Rome didn’t fall at the hands of drunken, belligerent, animalistic hordes of visigoths, but to drunken, self-indulgent, pompous hordes of literary readers.

Good stuff in here. I would love for you to do a deep dive on Apollonius alone. I wouldn’t mind hearing obscure facts about the time he was walking around. I would also like to hear more about the fall of the Flavian dynasty. I am more interested in the fall of the Flavian political/societal infrastructure as well. Seems this stuff is Uber obscured tho. Great series.

Early Christian story is the general accepted point of view, which I am sure is extremely unreliable, especially in describing motives to these people who formed and forced its doctrines.

Historia
This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" - literature, epic traditions, private letters, and accounts - to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled.

Where’s the coverage of the reign and reform of the Flavian?
Revisado: 06-26-20
There is more to the Vespasian, Titus, Domitian saga. I know, because I have read it. I have also read many summaries of history like this one, and many of those summaries leave out that era. They don’t mention that Josephus was a Flavian pawn, what Josephus says about the flavians, and the significance of their battle and rule over their rivals, especially the Jews. Almost like it’s not there...but it is.

Historia
In The Pity of War, Niall Ferguson makes a simple and provocative argument: that the human atrocity known as the Great War was entirely England's fault. Britain, according to Ferguson, entered into war based on naive assumptions of German aims - and England's entry into the war transformed a Continental conflict into a world war, which they then badly mishandled, necessitating American involvement.

It will be helpful to have read a book on prewar France, Germany, Britain before getting beaten by so many historical concepts in regards to multiple countries. Good book, but you may get lost in the mix.

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Historia
Lying in the middle of a plain in modern day Iran is a forgotten ancient city: Persepolis. Built two and a half thousand years ago, it was known in its day as the richest city under the sun. Persepolis was the capital of Achaemenid Persian Empire, the largest empire the world had ever seen, but after its destruction, it was largely forgotten for nearly 2,000 years, and the lives and achievements of those who built it were almost entirely erased from history. Alexander the Great’s troops razed the city to the ground in a drunken riot to celebrate the conquest of the capital, after which time and sand buried it for centuries. It was not until the excavations of the 1930s that many of the relics, reliefs, and clay tablets that offer so much information about Persian life could be studied for the first time. Through archaeological remains, ancient texts, and work by a new generation of historians, a picture can today be built of this remarkable civilization and their capital city. Although the city had been destroyed, the legacy of the Persians survived, even as they mostly remain an enigma to the West and are not nearly as well understood as the Greeks, Romans, or Egyptians. In a sense, the Achaemenid Persian Empire holds some of the most enduring mysteries of ancient civilization.

Historia
By the seventh century BCE, Thrace was experiencing the migration of Cimmerians and Scythians. The result was that the northern Black Sea Scythians developed first on the territory of Byzantium, and trade and industrial colonization stretched from the Golden Horn to the Sea of Azov and the lower Don region. In addition, the Sarmatians and Getae on the lower Don were also involved in a profitable trade with this area.

History is a puzzle. To learn it, you must read and listen/read various books, detailing various times in history, of various ruling classes. This book covers parts of history that are often over looked. Thank you! Need to reread, and try to compare what I’ve already learned.

In this pathbreaking work, now with a new introduction, Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky show that, contrary to the usual image of the news media as cantankerous, obstinate, and ubiquitous in their search for truth and defense of justice, in their actual practice they defend the economic, social, and political agendas of the privileged groups that dominate domestic society, the state, and the global order.

The fact that the middle class is so oblivious to this information is probably the main reason our political system is a nice little sham.
