Historia
It is a hot summer in rural Ireland. A child is taken by her father to live with relatives on a farm, not knowing when or if she will be brought home again. In the Kinsellas' house, she finds an affection and warmth she has not known and slowly, in their care, begins to blossom. But there is something unspoken in this new household—where everything is so well tended to—and this summer must soon come to an end.

Bittersweet story of abandonment and love
Revisado: 12-20-24
Great performance reading in an Irish light lilt. Sad story but even better than the film version “The Quiet Girl.” Nice to hear the tale in English since all dialogue was in Irish in the film.

Historia
We live in a world obsessed with drinking. We drink at baby showers and work events, brunch and book club, graduations and funerals. Yet no one ever questions alcohol’s ubiquity—in fact, the only thing ever questioned is why someone doesn’t drink. It is a qualifier for belonging and if you don’t imbibe, you are considered an anomaly. As a society, we are obsessed with health and wellness, yet we uphold alcohol as some kind of magic elixir, though it is anything but.

Best Insights into Women and Alcohol Use Ever
Revisado: 02-01-23
Loved this book. Was doing a dry January when I bought it. Thought it would help motivate me to stay away from my evenings with a cocktail followed by wine. Always have silently asked myself if I was one of the Others-an Alcoholic. Knew I would never follow the AA recovery plan with the 12 steps & in person meetings. But Holly Whittaker opened my eyes to exactly why the Alcoholic label and sequestering of the bad Alcoholics from the rest of the over imbibing world made sense for Big Alcohol’s marketing plans. Highly recommend this book to anyone who fears that they drink alcohol in a way that makes them especially vulnerable to addiction. We all get the same brain reactions to drinking and no one is weaker or genetically inferior because they drink more of this highly addictive substance.

Historia
During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of 30-something friends from Oxford meets to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students 10 years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands - the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves. They arrive on December 30, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world. Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead.

Close to Christie
Revisado: 12-28-20
I enjoyed my first Lucy Foley novel although I would not say her book was very similar to an Agatha Christie book. The setting in “The Hunting Party” is typical English cozy mystery setting in the highlands. There are at least 10 main characters out of a cast of 17. The author devotes most of the book to character descriptions. Her characters are well-drawn and ring true. The murderer and the ultimate victim are slowly revealed with lots of clues that make the reader feel you are catching on well before the reveal near the end. Altogether an atmospheric novel that is perfect to read in the winter by your own fire.
