Historia
Foreign Gods, Inc. tells the story of Ike, a New York-based Nigerian cab driver who sets out to steal the statue of an ancient war deity from his home village and sell it to a New York gallery. Ike's plan is fueled by desperation. Despite a degree in economics from a major American college, his strong accent has barred him from the corporate world. Forced to eke out a living as a cab driver, he is unable to manage the emotional and material needs of a temperamental African American bride and a widowed mother demanding financial support. When he turns to gambling, his mounting losses compound his woes.

It was okay

The story itself was interesting I guess but it's slow. With the narrator, the story REALLY moves even slower. It took me forever to get through this book. Maybe it would be better to read the actual book?

Historia
"My name is 'J' and I'm awkward--and Black. Someone once told me those were the two worst things anyone could be. That someone was right. Where do I start?" Being an introvert in a world that glorifies cool isn't easy. But when Issa Rae, the creator of the Shorty Award-winning hit series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, is that introvert--whether she's navigating love, work, friendships, or rapping--it sure is entertaining.

Pretty Good
Revisado: 03-03-15
I like Issa Rae. We're the same age and her awkwardness reminds me so much of myself and my best friend growing up. Some stories were cringeworthy as she put herself in some really awkward and uncomfortable situations in the name of wanting to be accepted. I can relate to this, and I think most people can, but to a certain level. Some stories just made me feel really bad for her teenage years, which if you knew me during that same time you'd know how crazy it is for me to say that, LOL! She was gutsy and did things to be accepted that I just never did or would do in middle and high school. I mean, just total and complete embarrassing herself, geez. But then, other situations she described were like listening to myself tell the story.
The book was good, I like her conversational writing style. It's an autobiography so it isn't necessarily meant to be funny, but there were definitely some laugh out loud moments. Her narration was okay, though she does this weird thing where she rolls her tongue on the end of some random words. After a while it started to get on my nerves and was a bit distracting for me. I would hear it and keep hearing it in my head for the next several seconds.
I recommend this book for people to get to know the back story of a talented up and coming writer/actress and who's work I enjoy (her show ABG on youtube is hilarious), but maybe read the hard copy instead of listening to the audiobook.

Glorious is set against the backdrops of the Jim Crow South, the Harlem Renaissance, and the civil rights era. Blending the truth of American history with the fruits of Bernice L. McFadden's rich imagination, this is the story of Easter Venetta Bartlett, a fictional Harlem Renaissance writer whose tumultuous path to success, ruin, and revival offers a candid portrait of the American experience in all its beauty and cruelty.

I don't even know what I just listened to. I'm disappointed. The story just didn't seem cohesive and the ending was odd. I've only read one other book by McFadden and it was good so I had high hopes. I just don't know what happened here. I'm not sure what the plot was and I have so many questions. I was bored and only finished because I paid for it and I loved Alfre Woodard's narration. Other than that, the story was a fail for me.
