Love Kate Mulgrew reading this. Like listening to my second grade teacher cussing in the grocery store.

Would suggest for intelligent people who can handle dry parts like in non fiction. Very realistic scifi which skirts the edge of what is real and imaginary. An excellent dissection of humanity and the struggle between collectivism versus the individual.

This is a very good story that weaves compelling scandal and drama with sophisticated and very real computer science breakthroughs. The only problem, albeit slight, is the rushed ending.

I listened to this work thinking I was getting a fresh new supernatural horror story. Nothing could be further from supernatural than the abusive paternal religious fundamentalism and maternal passive complicity that shapes the lives of these fictional children, ultimately leading to horrific results. The most powerful aspect of this story is that I have the knowledge that these kinds of things do indeed take place in American families all over this country. Children are routinely and often savagely psychologically/physically damaged by overreacting parents lacking the compassion and mindfulness needed to accept their children as real people and to treat them with dignity throughout their lives. It's scary and it is true that we, the parents, are the monsters that create the ghosts inside our "broken" children's minds.

Would you try another book from Murray McDonald and/or Adam Verner?

I don't know. I don't think the story is awful, but the characters and action sure are one-dimensional. I stopped listening 1/4 of the way through.

Would you recommend Calculating God to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes. For two reasons. First of all, it is a wonderful story with suspense. Although many of the characters are pretty thin (domestic terrorists, museum director, etc.), the drama and imagery is true sci-fi. Second, the arguments posed by the alien characters, being largely those used by Creationists, can act as target-practice for atheist-humanists .. because, quite frankly, each and every one of the aliens' arguments for God is flawed and quite easily defeated.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It was a fun treatise to the legendary Monty Python's Flying Circus. It is written as a thesis, but many anecdotes were fun to listen to.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This story is a lot of fun and suitable for adolescent and young adult ... as long as you don't mind gruesome imagery. At no point is it scary to me. The scathing commentary on the Church and medieval Europe (and America) is very well received and probably wouldn't be lost on a young reader.

What does Doug Bradley bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He gives the book the "voice" it demands.
