Historia
The epic, rollicking, up-and-down life of Muddy Waters—who went from Mississippi farmhand to musical legend, invented electric blues, and created the template for the rock-and-roll band and its wild lifestyle—is chronicled with rare vividness in Robert Gordon’s widely praised biography.

Good bio on Muddy. Covered pretty much everything including his spats with Wolf. Ken Mo is a very good blues artist but, IMHO, not so much as a book narrator. I really enjoyed the book.

Historia
The Somme: these words conjure the image of war rigidly fought by traditional means even when catastrophe clearly loomed. Relying on personal testimonies never before published, this study of those who survived the first day of battle (July 1, 1916) captures this epic conflagration from all angles. Follow the action as soldiers crawl across No Man’s Land in the face of German guns, struggle with the conditions in the trenches, and survey the scene from the air as the RFC tries to control the skies above the battlefield.

Too much troop identification
Revisado: 02-05-25
Half the book was spent identifying each soldier mentioned in the narrative. Not only names but troop ID as well. It seemed to me as I was just listening to a roster of the dead complete with identifying corps, battalion, regiment, etc.

Historia
With the end of the Civil War, the nation recommenced its expansion onto traditional Indian tribal lands, setting off a wide-ranging conflict that would last more than three decades. In an exploration of the wars and negotiations that destroyed tribal ways of life even as they made possible the emergence of the modern United States, Peter Cozzens gives us both sides in comprehensive and singularly intimate detail.

Very good narrative
Revisado: 02-03-25
Pretty complete story of the plight of the Native Americans in this country from the early 1830’s to, what turned out to be, the end. Filled in a few holes for me personally especially from the Arizona area. The way these people were treated, lied to time and time again, lack of any discipline for horrendous crimes makes my skin crawl.

Historia
The best one-volume biography of Madison’s life, Ketcham’s biography not only traces Madison’s career, it gives listeners a sense of the man. As Madison said of his early years in Virginia under the study of Donald Robertson, who introduced him to thinkers like Montaigne and Montesquieu, "all that I have been in life I owe largely to that man." It also captures a side of Madison that is less rarely on display.

Historia
Reviled by the United States government as a troublemaker and a coward, revered by his people as a great warrior chief, Sitting Bull has long been one of the most fascinating and misunderstood figures in American history. Distinguished historian Robert M. Utley has forged a compelling portrait of Sitting Bull, presenting the Lakota perspective for the first time and rendering the most unbiased, historically accurate, and vivid portrait of the man to date.

I learned quite a bit about SB, inasmuch as one can from a modern white writer. Considering the interviews with relatives and friends it’s probably as close as we’ll ever get to the real Sitting Bull. I enjoyed this.

Historia
Robert Johnson is the subject of the most famous myth about the blues: he allegedly sold his soul at the crossroads in exchange for his incredible talent, and this deal led to his death at age 27. But the actual story of his life remains unknown save for a few inaccurate anecdotes. Up Jumped the Devil is the result of over 50 years of research. Gayle Dean Wardlow has been interviewing people who knew Robert Johnson since the early 1960s, and he was the person who discovered Johnson's death certificate in 1967.

Always wanted the true story
Revisado: 01-05-25
I’ve been listening to RJ for many years. I’ve heard all the stories about him made up by people who wanted to make a dime off his name. This book filled in a lot of gaps that had been missing from the narratives I’ve heard over the years. I believe the authors tried to give us the best information on his life and death that can be provided. Of course nobody can fill in all the blanks but this does as good a job as you’ll hear. The narrator was good. Thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook.

Historia
Alongside Waterloo and Gettysburg, the Battle of Verdun during World War I stands as one of history’s greatest clashes. Yet it is also one of the most complex and misunderstood. Conventional wisdom holds that the battle began in February 1916 and lasted until December, when the victorious French wrested all the territory they had lost back from the Germans. In fact, says historian John Mosier, from the very beginning of the war until the armistice in 1918, no fewer than eight distinct battles were waged for the possession of Verdun.

I assumed this narrative would have been more along the lines of the actual first hand accounts of Verdun. It concentrated more on getting the facts about the several battles in chronological order and that there were actually more than one battle. Was interesting but not what I expected.
