Historia
From the number-one best-selling author of The Ashes of London and The Fire Court this is the first instalment in the acclaimed Lydmouth series. Workmen in the small market town of Lydmouth are demolishing an old cottage. A sledgehammer smashes into what looks like a solid wall. Instead, layers of wallpaper conceal the door of a locked cupboard which holds a box - and in the box is the skeleton of a young baby.

Andrew Taylor deserves a wider readership!
Revisado: 06-24-24
Both the story and the performance were top-notch. I read the physical book about 15 years ago but never finished the series so I’m circling back…and find Philip Franks’ wonderful performance!
Something I’ve noticed about Andrew Taylor’s work is that while you’re often reading quickly, because of the nature of his pacing, if you read too fast, you’ll miss a detail that youll wish you had caught. This is a book and performance to be savored.

Historia
It’s 1852 and Margaret Lennox, a young widow, attempts to escape the shadows of her past by taking a position as governess to an only child, Louis, at an isolated country house in the west of England. But Margaret soon starts to feel that something isn’t quite right. There are strange figures in the dark, tensions between servants, and an abandoned east wing. Even stranger is the local gossip surrounding Mrs. Eversham, Louis’s widowed mother, who is deeply distrusted in the village.

Creepy and atmospheric!
Revisado: 03-16-23
I really enjoyed this historical novel from the Victorian period. It felt, to me, like a love letter to ‘Jane Eyre’ and other Victorian classics. Many secrets, slowly revealed throughout, will have you listening well into the night. The narration was absolutely brilliant and I’m already looking forward to the author’s next novel! Give this one a try; you won’t be sorry!

The Work is simply four questions that, when applied to a specific problem, enable you to see what is troubling you in an entirely different light. As Katie says, "It's not the problem that causes our suffering; it's our thinking about the problem." Contrary to popular belief, trying to let go of a painful thought never works; instead, once we have done The Work, the thought lets go of us. At that point we can truly love what is, just as it is.

Life-changing book
Revisado: 10-31-19
I highly recommend both this book and YouTube clips of Byron Katie doing The Work on a wide range of topics. These concepts have got me the closest to clarity and peace of anything I've ever seen or read in over fifty years. Definitely worth a try because the changes can be very fast.

Terrific volume in a wonderful series
Revisado: 12-15-18
Trollope is not the dry boring author I for years thought he was. This performance was amazing and I can't recommend this book or Simon Vance's wonderful narration highly enough. Wonderful love stories, terrific characterization, it never gets boring even tho it's around 650 pp long. Do yourself a favor and read the entire series. The first, "The Warden", is just a bit dry but it is also v short. The second book is almost a continuation of the first, but more lively and a terrific read and they get better as the six-volume series progresses.
I also recommend Katie at Books and Things on YouTube, who has read every Dickens, Austen, Hardy, Gaskell and more, and has a video about every one of those novels and every novel in this series and much more.
