Historia
In Remain in Love, Frantz writes about the beginnings of Talking Heads - their days as art students in Providence, moving to the sparse Chrystie Street loft Frantz, Weymouth, and Byrne shared where the music that defined an era was written. With immersive vivid detail, Frantz describes life on tour, down to the meals eaten and the clothes worn - and reveals the mechanics of a long and complicated working relationship with a mercurial frontman.

A good history of the band and the New Wave and their closest compatriots, but dragged down by ceaseless name dropping. A thousand names, of which 5% were an interesting connection. Otherwise just obscure references with meaningless context.

Historia
When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, college football was at the height of its popularity. As the nation geared up for total war, one branch of the service dominated the aspirations of college football stars: the United States Marine Corps. Which is why, on Christmas Eve of 1944, when the 4th and 29th Marine regiments found themselves in the middle of the Pacific Ocean training for what would be the bloodiest battle of the war – the invasion of Okinawa—their ranks included one of the greatest pools of football talent ever assembled.

A lot of time spent describing why America has been a nation of haters, in the author’s opinion. Glad I only spent $5!

The reader has an awful intonation emphasizing the wrong syllables and are constant, jarring and clumsy. Simplest and most repeated: PO-lice, TEE-v, JEW-ly. Verging on torture. Don’t put yourself through the listen.

For 20 years Daniel Paquette's murder in New Hampshire went unsolved. It remained a secret between two high school friends until Eric Windhurst's arrest in 2005. What was revealed was a crime born of adolescent passion between Eric and Daniel's stepdaughter, Melanie - redefining the meaning of loyalty, justice, and revenge.

Great telling of a fascinating case
Revisado: 08-31-21
As many awful secrets in small towns and rural hamlets as in a city.
The presentation here is a great true crime story. On one hand, we want to believe the accusation of innocent Melanie and hate her stepfather, but it never got beyond accusation. So any sense of retribution from the murder is tempered.
I keep wondering if police had investigated Paquette after his death based on the counselor’s notification of Melanie’s complaint to see if he had a history of sex crime, would such proof have created more justification in the public’s mind for Eric’s and Melanie’s crimes.

Historia
This book essentially launched the memoir craze that has been going strong ever since. The story is pretty grim: teen-aged Wolff moves with his divorced mother from Florida to Utah to Washington State to escape her violent boyfriend. When she remarries, Wolff finds himself in a bitter battle of wills with his abusive stepfather, a contest in which the two prove to be more evenly matched than might have been supposed.

Instead, read his brother’s marvelous memoir, ‘The Duke Of Deception’. Geoffrey Wolff’s story is far more engaging and still captures the lurid family history of father, mother, sons and ancestors.

Best-selling author Bryan Burrough reveals how four Texas oil tycoons transformed America. Rising from humble beginnings through hard work and shrewd dealings, they shifted the balance of power in American politics. While hobnobbing with movie stars and presidents, the Big Rich also created the legend of the swaggering Texas oilman with island hideaways and sprawling ranches.

Historia
A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, The Sun Also Rises introduces two of Hemingway’s most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. The story follows the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates. In his first great literary masterpiece, Hemingway portrays an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions.

Hurt hurts
Revisado: 05-27-20
I thought it might be a great listen as a fan of Hurt but it really was insufferable in the end.
I was ok until the immensely grating Mike was introduced. Some of Hemingway’s worst dialogue, repetitive and dumb. With Hurt reading Mike as a drunk Scotsman, it was torture.
I think I last read this in high school and this confirmed for me that Fitzgerald is so much better.

On Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945, 1,500 Allied ships and 1.5 million men gathered off the coast of the Japanese island of Okinawa and launched the largest amphibious assault of the Pacific War. The first American officer ashore was Major Art Shaw, a unit commander in the US Army’s 361 Artillery Battalion of the 96th Division, often called the Deadeyes.

Questionable work by the ghost writer
Revisado: 04-19-20
Says the Japanese were firing a 155mm at the author from close range? They did not use 155mm And it’s strictly a long range cannon anyway. No artillery officer would imagine this
First the author has it as a battery of 105 mm then a few lines later it turns into a 155mm battery, then back to 105mm.
Battalion One? Try first battalion.
Says cobras aren’t native to the Philippines, except they are on Okinawa.
Dialog is just so hokey it has to be invented by the ignorant ghost writer.:
“Keep your heads down men! The Japanese may be aiming at us!”
“Cease firing until further notice!”
I’m on chapter 7 and I’m done with this contrived story.

He got off easy
Revisado: 04-08-20
I waited for the Pains of Opium section expecting the awful conditions of withdrawal, physical deterioration, incapacitation and the host of other afflictions we see in society’s modern opioid epidemic.
It seems the ‘pains’ for DeQuincey were only phantasmagorical dreams that twisted his sleep. Is that it? He was lucky.
