Historia
With vivid story-telling, extensive historical research, and on-the-ground reporting, Ghattas dispels accepted truths about a region she calls home. She explores how Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shia Iran, once allies and twin pillars of US strategy in the region, became mortal enemies after 1979. She shows how they used and distorted religion in a competition that went well beyond geopolitics. Feeding intolerance, suppressing cultural expression, and encouraging sectarian violence from Egypt to Pakistan, the war for cultural supremacy led to many events.

Middle East Deep Dive
Revisado: 07-14-21
This was an interesting deep dive into the Middle East, and I consider it a great source of knowledge for those who wish to catch up on the last fifty years of Muslim history in a short time. The book was so interesting and full of details that I could not stop listening to it and finished it in less than a week. It is an incredibly ambitious book as it covers 40+ years of history in a large region, so its only flaw is that it is too short (16 hours). In 1979 I was 13 years old and remember being glued to the TV every night of the hostage crisis in Iran even though I had no real understanding of the actual crisis. Reading this well researched book explained everything (albeit 40 years later). In a nutshell it is one long train of catastrophes that go relentlessly from bad to worse for the Arabian/Persian Gulf region starting in 1979; particularly for Pakistan, Iran, and Syria. I now feel compelled to dive even deeper.

Historia
Are you a history lover? Do you like to discover new and obscure facts about historical events? If so, then you are in for a treat, because this audiobook offers precisely that. Not many people have heard of the name Olive Oatman, yet her story has been an inspiration for books, poems, television shows, and feature films. Olive Oatman was a young girl who experienced horrible tragedies throughout most of her life, but put them behind her as a young woman, and became the first female public speaker of her time.

Poor Choice for a Narrator
Revisado: 05-26-21
I was immediately put off with the narrator. It was like listening to an over enthusiastic male teacher from the 1950's. Many things were over explained and the author repeated many details over and over.
