Historia
Part thesis, part memoir, and part poetry, this book is unlike any other therapeutic text. Psychotherapist and writer Foluke Taylor explores how the centering of Black women’s experiences in therapeutic scholarship allows for greater space―space for wandering, for wondering, and for deepening narratives―in every therapeutic relationship.

Wonderful
Revisado: 04-09-23
I enjoyed every carefully chosen, beautifully spoken word. It helped me to think differently and more deeply about so many ideas (radical hospitality, I’m looking at you). It spoke to me as a therapist, as a Black, (B/b) female therapist, and as it turns out, as someone who had to also discover her ancestry. Thank you for this gift.

As a therapist, it was a dream read for me.

I felt attached to this book within seconds. The narration feels so accessible to me and the subject matter - a therapist sharing her own journey as well as her journey with her patients is like someone writing into my life. Listening to it a second time.

Historia
Nikki lives in cosmopolitan West London, where she tends bar at the local pub. The daughter of Indian immigrants, she's spent most of her 20-odd years distancing herself from the traditional Sikh community of her childhood, preferring a more independent (that is, Western) life. When her father's death leaves the family financially strapped, Nikki, a law school dropout, impulsively takes a job teaching a "creative writing" course at the community center in the beating heart of London's close-knit Punjabi community.

Stay with it for a really wonderful read

It was a tad difficult getting into this book - a bit scattered at the beginning, didn't seem like it would be meaningful, or beautiful prose, or lovable characters, but I followed my rule - I have to give a new book a try for at least 2-3 chapters. Before I knew it, I was involved and engaged with it, and forgot to keep looking for things to critique. The book has multiple subplots, all engaging, some inspiring. The character development is nicely done, and at the end of the day, I've got a bit of a book hangover! Loved it. Loved Nicky. Loved the messages. Loved the Indian and British cultural touches. Yummy.
