Historia
The great city of Tova is shattered. The sun is held within the smothering grip of the Crow God’s eclipse, but a comet that marks the death of a ruler and heralds the rise of a new order is imminent. The Meridian: a land where magic has been codified and the worship of gods suppressed. How do you live when legends come to life, and the faith you had is rewarded?

Part 2 of an entrancing story
Revisado: 08-05-22
The people who are complaining that this book is somehow unsatisfying clearly have never read much epic fantasy. it leaves much unexplained but that is the nature of the genre. And it does a great job of leaving the reader feeling like they know more than they did and excited to see where this story goes.

Historia
In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial even proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world. Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger.

The writing here matches and often surpasses many of the fantasy novels I love and return to repeatedly. I don't think this is going a be "single listen series" for me and I'm enthusiastic to read the next one. It's clear a great deal of love and care went into the recording and production here and I'm so grateful. This one is worth every penny.

Fantastic
Revisado: 07-17-22
This is a truly wonderful novel and I can't recommend it strongly enough to absolutely everyone.
my only quibble with it is that the audio editing could have been more thoughtful. this book shifts character perspective multiple times per chapter and the way this is edited, there isn't even a breath between one character and the next at times, meaning that you get a bit if whiplash. unless the printed version changes character perspective mid-paragraph, the audio version should give at least a beat during transitions.

I'm not mad I listened to it but it'sthere are many better works to choose from. there is nothing new here to recommend it. I wish they had given the performers something more than cut and paste variations of characters they have played before.

Bad production fails female artists and characters
Revisado: 08-13-21
The story is actually better than much of the High republic so far but the production here is totally sub par. It really bothers me that so little effort was put into the audio direction and production on one of the few female centric/female read Star Wars Novels when they clearly go all out for the ones read by Marc Thompson.
The reader here is very capable but everything was very rushed and done on the cheap and it shows. Clearly they did not have the schedule or inclination to pay for her to do the necessary preparation to align her readings of esoteric words with the previous books. Honestly not every Straw Wars book needs sounds effects etc. However they could at the very least put more consideration into recording more appropriate intonation for the chapter titles (which were obviously read entirely separately) and adding just a little pause from the end of one chapter before reading the chapter number for the next. the list goes on but at the end of the day they simply decided to throw their female writer, female reader and female characters under the bus. It's not a good look publishers. Do better.
It's rare I ever think books need to be entirely recorded but this is one. The publishers have the deep pockets to do it and they should bring the same reader back with better support.

It's not bad per se & necessary for HR going ahead
Revisado: 02-04-21
I noticed there was a lot of mixed reviews going on with this. No it's not the best SW book (I have yet to come across anything better than I, Jedi) but it does some necessary heavy lifting for world building for High Republic Era. That said, it does seem like there were too many cooks in the kitchen.
If you think you want to get into High Republic Era SW, I think it's worth the read and the production values in the audiobook do a lot to elevate the experience.

Environmental devastation and economic chaos have turned America into a land of horrifying depravity. Assault, theft, sexual abuse, slavery, and murder are commonplace. And a zealous, bigoted tyrant has won his way into the White House. Directly opposed is Lauren Olamina, founder of Earthseed - a new faith that teaches "God Is Change". Persecuted for "heathen" beliefs as much as for having a Black female leader, Earthseed's followers face a life-and-death struggle to preserve their vision.

A Fantastic book with poor audio editing
Revisado: 07-15-20
Everything about the book and the readers is fantastic and absolutely everyone should listen to it. But be prepared for a lot of poorly done edits wherein a chapter or section ends and no time is given before starting the next. it's incredibly jarring and takes you out of the story. I imagine it's a result of lack of attention during the transfer to Audible from the original CD/Tape based format. I'm bummed that audible hasn't addressed the problem and will try to contact them more directly.

This book + Tim Curry = Wrong Combination
Revisado: 06-07-20
I absolutely love Tim Curry's reading but he shouldn't have been chosen to read this book. It really takes me out of the story when the primary protagonist is a woman and they have a male reader. I honestly find it really disappointing and I think I'd have enjoyed the book more if I'd read the paper copy. It's not like there is any shortage of talented female readers available. Tim Curry is great and I will definitely look for other books with white-male protagonist books he has read but I won't be continuing with this series.
