Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Easily one of the best books I’ve ever read!
Revisado: 08-18-24
I have been saying that there’s something missing in the writing, as of late. I definitely found whatever it was, in this book. The way Percival Everett weaves together a story is masterful, and he deserves every accolade possible for “James”.

Historia
When psychic travel agent Leda Foley is approached by a man searching for his sister, she quickly agrees to help. The missing woman disappeared with a vintage orange car, a fat sack of her employer’s cash, and a grudge against her philandering husband—a man who never even reported her missing. Meanwhile, Seattle PD detective Grady Merritt has temporarily misplaced his dog. While he’s passing out bright pink “Lost” flyers at the Mount Rainier visitor’s center, the wayward pooch appears—with a human leg in his mouth.

Great book!
Revisado: 11-30-22
I stumbled upon the author’s first book in this series by happenstance, and as I flipped through the pages on my 14 hour flight, I was so glad I did. This second book’s storyline did not disappoint! Although it was a quick listen, the plot still managed to be funny and engaging. Nor did it lag unnecessarily.
The only negative critique was the narrator for the detective. The book is so quirky and upbeat, but his narration really dulled that down for me. By no means is he a bad narrator, but this book just wasn’t the right fit for his tone of voice and delivery. I found myself wondering, why we even needed 2 narrators.
All in all, it was a 4.5 out of 5. I am in love with the author’s writing style and the characters. I can’t wait for the next in the series.

Historia
Ever have one of those days where life just plain sucks? Welcome to my last three months - ever since I caught my can’t-be-soon-enough-ex-husband cheating with his paralegal. I’m 35 years old, and I’ve lost my NYC apartment, my job, my money, and frankly, my dignity. But the final heartache in the suck sandwich of my life? My great-aunt Maggie died. The only family member who’s ever gotten me. Even after death, though, she’s helping me get back up again. Too bad that bravado only lasts as long as it takes to drive into Huckleberry Hills. And see the house.

Sigh…Why?
Revisado: 08-18-21
Man, where do I start? The main character is very unlikeable. She drifts from whiny to self loathing with every other sentence. I actually yelled, “B!+(h shut up!” no less than 5 TIMES! If you like a dumb damsel in distress story, this is your book. Sis CANNOT think herself out of a box without a man leading the way. I really did try to finish this book, but with about 5’ish hours to go I had to throw in the towel. After the last, “B!+(h shut up,” escaped my mouth I knew it was time to let this go. I have lots of other thoughts, but I really don’t want to be banned from Audible so I will part with this… Unless you want a sappy and predictable story where a woman starts a new life after 30, do not read this book. Periodt.

Historia
When Lila Macapagal moves back home to recover from a horrible breakup, her life seems to be following all the typical rom-com tropes. She's tasked with saving her Tita Rosie's failing restaurant, and she has to deal with a group of matchmaking aunties who shower her with love and judgment. But when a notoriously nasty food critic (who happens to be her ex-boyfriend) drops dead moments after a confrontation with Lila, her life quickly swerves from a Nora Ephron romp to an Agatha Christie case.

I loved it. This writing style puts me in the mind of Janet Evanovich, but the addition of food made it a little bit tastier. My only complaint is that February of 2022 is a long wait for the second book!

Leonid McGill's spent a lifetime building up his reputation in the New York investigative scene. Phillip "Catfish" Worry is a 92-year-old Mississippi bluesman who needs Leonid's help with a simple task: Deliver a letter revealing the black lineage of a wealthy heiress and her corrupt father. Unsurprisingly, the opportunity to do a simple favor while shocking the prevailing elite is too much for Leonid to resist.

Annoying at times, but overall a good read.
Revisado: 05-31-20
I absolutely love how light-hearted and fun this series is. I’ve always enjoyed it, as I’ve read it off and on my entire adult life. I guess now that I am circling back to it —and times have changed so much, parts of it are now annoying. The main character is mediocre at her job, careless af, and has to depend on one of two men rescuing her from herself repeatedly. It’s like —she just doesn’t want to live! At times, I found myself frustrated with her quirkiness that sometimes borderlines on stupidity. Ma’am! Keep the damn gun on you AND loaded. Why does someone from your family have to be approached or kidnapped for you to do what only equates to common damn sense! (Sigh)
Any who, I know it’s dated fiction so I’ll get off my 2020 soapbox and give props where they’re due. In spite of all of that, it’s still pretty dang good.

Good book, but just too long!
Revisado: 02-13-20
This was an overall good book, and it was well written. I felt that it had an original and well thought out plot. My only, and I mean only, issue is that it was entirely too long. I was able to figure out what the ending would entail about 12 hrs in. I really didn’t need 9 more hours to find out that the heroine would triumph over her adversary.
